You're on the only track I can think of, setting those guys at Set Up A (I hardly EVER use Long A), moving their pull setting up a bit, e.g. tempting to set a 2 or 3, but if they struggle and you have Gagne, Chapman, et al.. to come in, move to pull setting 3 or 4. I don't meddle too much with pitch count. Take their real life IP/G and multiply it by 15.5 and use it for both TPC and MPC in 90% of the cases.
I don't use the LH/RH specialist roles any longer. Tried it a bit to see if it works and how it works. Never figured it out. Sparky didn't bring them in when I thought appropriate and left them in past the time I felt he should. Tried pull settings at 5, low pitch counts, late inning availability and it still never worked for me.
