Steve Carlton for nothing didn't turn out to well for the Cardiinals and Boston probably won the Varitek and Derek Lowe for Heathcliff Slocumb
Boston probably won that trade?  It led to 2 World Series titles!!!

How about Pedro for Delino DeShields straight-up?  There were definitely worse trades on the Delino side, but there haven't been a helluva lot better pitchers ever than Pedro.

Joe DiMaggio

Trades & Transactions

Joe DiMaggio Trades & Transactions
11-21-1934 Traded by San Francisco (PCL) to New York Yankees in exchange for cash and 4 players to be named later (November 21, 1934); San Francisco (PCL) received Doc Farrell, Floyd Newkirk, Jim Densmore and Ted Norbert (December 19, 1934); Doc Farrell refused to report to San Francisco (PCL) and New York Yankees sent $5000 (1935) to complete trade.

That's not really a fair one to criticize.  A player of DiMaggio's caliber would have signed a contract with a Major League team soon afterwards and they would have gotten nothing.  That's like criticizing South American soccer teams for not getting more money when they sell players like Neymar to big European clubs.  Other European clubs would get a lot more money, but they'd also be a threat to retain a player of that caliber when his contract runs out.  DiMaggio was never going to have a long PCL career.

The Seals' owner needed cash.  He actually offered Dimaggio to the Cubs for cash only, with the promise to pay some (or all? I don't remember) of the cash back if the Cubs weren't satisfied with Dimaggio.  Joe had suffered a knee injury that the Cubs' owner was wary of and he said no, even with little to no risk involved.  Oops.

Here is the worst NON-making of a trade in baseball history:

In the winter of 1937, Chester Washington, a writer for the black newspaper The Pittsburgh Courier and later an influential publisher, wrote the following telegram to Pittsburgh Pirates manager Pie Traynor.

“KNOW YOUR CLUB NEEDS PLAYERS STOP HAVE ANSWER TO YOUR PRAYERS RIGHT HERE IN PITTSBURGH STOP JOSH GIBSON CATCHER FIRST BASE B. LEONARD AND RAY BROWN PITCHER OF HOMESTEAD GRAYS AND S. PAIGE PITCHER COOL PAPA BELL OF PITTSBURGH CRAWFORDS ALL AVAILABLE AT REASONABLE FIGURES STOP WOULD MAKE PIRATES FORMIDABLE PENNANT CONTENDERS STOP WHAT IS YOUR ATTITUDE? STOP WIRE ANSWER”

dahs and skunk-

That's why I listed the DiMaggio trade separately from my previous post, the Pedro Trade.  I know it's not in the same league, so to speak.

Good point. Gotta go for it. Win more games.

Harry Chiti for a player to be named later

Yeah and that player turned out to really suck too when they finally got him.

Mulder was coming off of 4 outstanding seasons in Oakland. Haren was still considered a prospect. Mulder went 16-8 in STL before shoulder issues stalled his career. Mulder appeared to be the better pitcher at the time of the trade...hard to see how Walt gets slammed on this one..
with this logic you could defend the Reds on the Hoosier Thunderbolt for Matty trade

Larry Andersen for Jeff Bagwell has to be included, I should think. As would McGriff and Fernandez for Alomar and Carter.

The two Cleveland Indian-New York Yankees trades of the early 70s:

  • On 27-Nov-72 the Yankees acquired Nettles and Gerry Moses for John Ellis, Jerry Kenney, Charlie Spikes and Rusty Torres then on 27-Apr-74 they picked up Chambliss, Cecil Upshaw and Dick Tidrow for Fritz Peterson, Steve Kline, Tom Buskey and Fred Beene.

Even at the time the Bagwell trade was a bit of a head scratcher. That one is probably the worst.

Kind of a blockbuster at the time. Although it worked out much better for Toronto!
