How do the NTC work with this, when is it enforced? As soon as the trade is agreed to or after the trade is approved by the league?  I thought that the player would reject the trade if he was going to a worse team, is that always the case or is it more like 50/50?

Player will reject the deal immediately.   I think it's a 1-2 game difference between records if the lower win team is trying to acquire the player.   He always accepts to a better team.

So, if the player rejects in offseason, once season starts if one team has a better record, he accepts?

WW order changes after 28 games.   That's when the previous season results no longer matter.

Ah, gotcha. Thanks Mike.

just had a player use his NTC to refuse a trade to my team even though my record is 1 game better than his current team... any ideas why that is?
(I won the most recent World Series, so that should be a bonus in my favor... but I understand the difference between should be and is )

It's been speculated because that difference could change before the trade goes thru. I kind of think that's BS but it seems to play out more often than not.

hmm... so maybe I need to be 3+ games better than the other team, since in theory I could lose 3 games and the other team could win 3 before the trade goes thru.

In theory. I'm still not convinced that's all there is to it.
