Nate Colbert's Incredible Day

On August 1, 1972, San Diego Padre slugger, Nate Colbert, had the greatest hitting performance in Major League history during a doubleheader. That day, he hit five home runs, knocked in 13 and had 22 total bases. Coincidently, as a youngster, Nate was in the stands with his dad in St. Louis on May 2, 1954 when he witnessed Stan "The Man" Musial hit five home runs in a doubleheader. That day, he told his father that he wanted to do that someday.

Who was the first AL player to get both 3,000 hits and 400 home runs?

Who was the first switch hitter to get 100 hits in a season from each side of the plate?

hint: both players accomplished these things in the same season.

Well, OleProfessor -- seems like I'm following you around.....
I know one (hits from each side of plate), and the year, but not the first one (I had to cheat and look it up).
And since I had to cheat to get one part, I won't ruin your question by answering....
So building on your question, and I'm guessing more people know this one....
who joined the 400 homerun/3,000 hit club in 2015?

As a Tigers fan, one of the first things you learn is that Al Kaline was 1 homer away from being the first player in MLB history to accomplish that. He retired in 1974. So it's after 1974 and I'm assuming before the steroid era.

So my answer will be Hank Aaron because I know Eddie Murray did it, but I don't think he was the first.

Yaz and Garry Templeton in 1979.

Now...to add some controversy here....
While it is often reported that Templeton has 100 hits from each side of the plate, see his baseballreference split page:
http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/split.fcgi?id=templga01&year=1979&t=b

Notice that it shows him having 94 hits versus LHP.

Retrosheet (http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/1979/Jtempg0010041979.htm) also shows Templeton with only 94 hits versus LHP.

So, while it was originally reported Templeton had 100 from both sides, reviews if the baseball records are not so clear.
Who was next?
Well, Wilson Wilson reported accomplished that same feat in 1980......but...
check his Retrosheet....http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/1980/Jwilsw0010051980.htm
It shows him with only 99 hits versus LHP.....same for baseballreference......

If those sources are correct, then the answer is really no one.....

Templeton batted righty against righties at the end of the season to get that record.

Yes, so the records may lead to the wrong conclusion because they show how the pitcher is throwing, not how the batter is hitting.

Splits on B-R show both. They show hits "vs RHP as LHB" and "vs RHP as RHB". It shows him as having 96 hits as a RHB that season.

I would say the split stats are inaccurate in this case, There was a time that Billy Martin ordered Mike Pagiluaro to bat right handed and the splits don't show it.

A quick 1-2-3 inning of relief pitcher trivia:

1. Who holds the record for most strikeouts in a game as a relief pitcher?

2. Who holds the record for most strikeouts in a season as a relief pitcher?

3. Who holds the record for appearing in the most consecutive games as a relief pitcher?

For the second one, I automatically thought of Chapman, or Billy Wagner. But they didn't have the innings. Remembered I used Mark Eichhorn one time in WIS. He had 157 IP. I don't think he started a game either. 157 relief innings, he's my guess for most strikeouts on a season for a relief pifcher
