Basic lineup is done. Was going to go with Randy Winn and give up th O for D, but he was taken, so I went Sherry Magee and his .445 OBP in the outfield, pushing Heilman to DH. Still feel like I didn't get the big names, but with 6000 abs at .436 OBP, I hope to counter the low whip pitchers pretty well. Absolutely no speed on this team. Batting order is probably:

1 Phillips
2 Waner
3 Heilman
4 Giambi
5/6 Wright/Averill
7 Magee
8 Petrocelli
9 Torre

I'll take that for a rotation/bullpen. Not magnificent, but certainly viable. Now if I can generate some offense, I'll be golden!

An Earl Weaver/Moneyball type team, though I have reservations about if a lineup with High OBP/High Slg/Modest Avg can work in a huge money league like this.  The best hope I have is that guys can get on and have Junior, Berkman or Thome run into one, giving me a 2 or 3 run lead that my dominant high strikeout staff can hold onto.

The fielding ratings of this team are ok, which should help me hold leads.

The thing is s that I think that the majority of owners are using the same type of strategy that I am.

Team Name: Kind of a Big Deal
Home Park: Bennett Park
Current Salary: $175 million

My $64 million worth of pitchers should (based on sim history) give me a 3.18 ERA and 1.26 WHIP for up to 1,821 innings. Across 1,500 innings, they should allow 34 HR.

SP - 1917 Eddie Cicotte (2):
HR park so keeping the ball down is a must; the last "elite" deadballer on my list at the time.
SP - 1904 Jack Chesbro (3): Passed on good hitting for 488 innings of average or better pitching.
SP - 1888 Charlie Buffinton (9): Going all in on what amounts to a four man staff. Now I need to find some hitting!
LR - 1906 Doc White (8): His best sim season is as a high frequency reliever. Maybe lighting strikes twice?
LS - 2014 Andrew Miller (15A): More HR than I would like but a nice fit for 40 or so innings here.
SU - 1944 Joe Berry (14B):
Didn't need innings with so many already, but he has been solid for me before.
CL - 1918 Jake Northrop (12):
The best 53 innings available to me. Tim Burke, why couldn't you last a few more picks???

C - 1993 Chris Hoiles (10):
A personal favorite; decent OBP and some pop, plus a cheap A+ arm.
1B - 1939 Johnny Mize (13):
Hold, hold, HOLD! I can't believe he lasted to pick 294.
2B - 1922 Rogers Hornsby (1):
Thrilled he fell to #6 overall. Dingers in '22 likely win out over the .500 OBP in '24.
3B - 1981 Mike Schmidt (4): Tailor made 3B for my ballpark. The ideal cleanup batter to protect Rajah.
SS - 1996 Alex Rodriguez (5): Bat wins over glove, which I may regret. Right handed infield hitting for days...
LF - 1923 Ken Williams (7): Finally a lefty! Missed McCovey by two picks but Ken will slot into the #2 hole.
CF(R) - 1941 Pete Reiser (11): Sat on him for a few picks. Will be a nice #8 / #9 hitter.
RF(R) - 2010 Josh Hamilton (14A): Clean Hamilton will rake against righties. Was between him and Murcer.
DH - 1887 Pete Browning (6): Maybe the best pure leadoff hitter in the sim. More righties.

C - 1890 Buck Ewing (16B): D is average, but nice bat and uncommon speed at backup catcher.
1B(L) - 1972 Dick Allen (17A): Will man the cold corner against lefties with Mize taking the pine.
CF(L) - 2003 Milton Bradley (15B): My favorite platoon OF. A/A+ in the field and murders lefties. Will platoon with Reiser.
RF(L) - 2011 Matt Kemp (16A): Back when I rooted for him. Will also murder lefties in straight platoon with Hamilton.
2B/3B/SS - 2012 Marco Scutaro (17B): Swiss army knife.
3B/PH - 1995 Dean Palmer (17C): Will back up Schmidt. Bad glove / good bat.
Three bench spots left to go.  I think my lineup shakes out like this (with sim history OPS and thousands of $ per plate appearance). Three straight platoons (1B / CF / RF) and a time share at C.

DH 1887 Pete Browning (.949 / $13.1K)
LF 1923 Ken Williams (.998 / $12.3K)
2B 1922 Rogers Hornsby (1.155 / $16.9K)
3B 1981 Mike Schmidt (1.038 / $13.8K)
1B 1939 Johnny Mize (.999 / $11.1K) / 1972 Dick Allen (.973 / $11.0K)
RF 2010 Josh Hamilton (.901 / $12.3K) / 2011 Matt Kemp (.874 / $11.6K)
SS 1996 Alex Rodriguez (.919 / $11.8K)
C 1993 Chris Hoiles (.859 / $11.9K) / Buck Ewing (.861 / $11.2K)
CF 1941 Pete Reiser (.922 / $12.8K) / 2003 Milton Bradley (.834 / $12.0K)

Great draft all! Don't know if these numbers will cut it, but I ended at 153 million in salary. I have no real platoons and didn't draft any full time hitters as reserves, so basically all my salary is useable.

Pitching -- 1,587 innings 1.49 ERA, .185 OAV, 0.86 WHP, .20 HR/9

Batting --- 7000 ABs, 226 HRS, 1117 RBIS ,.340 AVG, .430 OBP, .545 SLG

B/B Fielding.

Good luck all. There are some STOCKED teams in this league.

NO top stars, but started with a Plan for Hillltop and mostly was able to implement The Plan. But was it a good plan? We shall see.

Once the final picks are made, I'll post my top 10 undrafted hitters & pitchers!
2/11/2016 1:04 AM
Alright folks it's time for some pre-draft analysis.  After sorting through hundreds of players, these are the top undrafted players, IMO.

Pretty solid team you could make from the free agents!

Catcher - Carlos Ruiz - Nice combo of power/defense from a premier position.  1997
1B - Don Mattingly - New manager of the Marlins just doesn't get any respect.  I can hear Mr. Burns yelling at him now to "cut those sideburns!"
2B - Cupid Childs - Highest OBP of any 2B available.  Defense from the late 1800's leaves a lot to be desired.  Make sure you have a solid glove guy as a backup or platoon.  Take 1973 Davey Johnson for some pop.  Bobby Grich is another great free agent.
3B - Harmon Killebrew - probably best served at DH but he does qualify at 3B.  The Killer!
SS - Joe Sewell - 4 K's in 736 PA's.  The ultimate contact hitter!!  If you like the longball, 1939 Vern Stephens is your man.
OF - Matt Holliday - Very solid numbers all the way around.  He's no Devon White with the glove so he'd need the occasional late inning sub, or some time at DH.
OF - Charlie Keller -Have had tremendous success with his 1943 season.
OF - Minnie Minoso - Put this man in the HOF already!!
DH - Dante Bichette - One of my all-time favorite SIM cookies.  Should've won 1995 NL MVP award!

SP - Mike Cuellar - 1969 Cuellar is one of the most cost effective SP's I've used in $100-$120 million cap leagues.  Not sure how he'd perform in this league.
SP - Amos Rusie - Named after a famous SIM user, or is it the other way around?
SP - Jim Palmer - One of the top undrafted HOFers.
SP - Kevin Appier - Also, a very cost effective SP in lower cap leagues.
SP - Jake Weimer - Would've been a nice addition to my turn of the century Cubs rotation, but I love 1981 Fernando Mania!
SP - Danny Jackson - Jackson's 1988 season is one of my favorite cookie seasons.  Again in a high cap league he may not fare as well but everybody's lineup is stacked.
SP - Jose Rijo - Jose was a very underrated pitcher for the Reds in the early 90's and WS MVP of one of the biggest upsets in playoff history!
RP - Rich Hill - 29 IP for $1.4 million?  The perfect pitcher for a high cap league.  Oh well, maybe next time.
RP - Rick Helling - One of the lowest WHIP & OAV in the entire database.  Perhaps his .65 HR/9 scared off some owners.
RP - Mark Melancon - Probably the top closer on the market.  That is unless you like Bobby Thigpen's 57 save 1990 season.
RP - Jack Ryan - Not the CIA officer made famous by Harrison Ford.  Pretty high HR rate for a 1908 pitcher but .50 BB/9.  Are you kidding me?
RP - Karl Best - Ah memories of watching Mariner baseball at the Kingdome.  This guy was going to be the next big thing.  Well, he was for a few months during the 1985 season.
RP - John Butcher - There are certain seasons that SIM well and 1981 is at the top of the list.  Butcher did not allow a HR which is pretty remarkable pitching for the Rangers!

I had Hill and Helling both typed on the screen before I doubted my amount of total innings so I went with Oswalt and Harden instead...we'll see how that one plays out. Interesting list I like Child's hate his glove and Killebrew is an interesting name but with so many "DH" seasons out there it doesn't surprise me. I really like Mattingly but he plays first...and the Gonzalez pick surprises me the most with how the HR was being valued by a lot of teams. Did Fonseca ever go, I love that guy at 100 or even 120 caps
2/11/2016 11:16 PM
Ryan Howard & Chris Davis went undrafted, not that their great SIM players!
2/12/2016 12:17 AM
Ryan Howards one year would be an amazing DH season. Even with the 100+ Ks, I'll take that type of OBP and HR/100
