This chart attempts to take a look at the degree to which success in each of themes was "common knowledge" among the top owners vs which ones required a more "original" outlook to succeed in. Numbers listed are win%s.

The 80M and 255M seem to be the two most "unique" themes while the 140M (surprisingly, to me) and 110M (less so) being the most heavily based in "common knowledge." None of the current Top 24 owners are at or below .500 currently (3/4 of the way through the season) in either of them.

5 of my teams are in divisional battles that all have 2 game leads or less. Ironically the one that isn't is in $255m, where we held a 10 game lead. That team has imploded. We trail by 8...

I will be doing the fifth standings update after tonight's cycle. I am expecting to be < .500 over these last 162 games (after averaging a 92-win pace through 2/3rd's of the season). My number of playoff teams dropped from 5 to barely 3. Despite being among the top 3 leaders for much of the season, I am by far no lock to advance to round 2. (I missed round 2 last year despite having the 7th best overall Exp Win%, and that was with 4 playoff teams).

maybe the second round should have been Top 48 instead of Top 24. Maybe I say that because I'm currently in 34th place -- but that said, I think that the difference between "Team 24" and "Team 35" is going to come down to basically one extra playoff series won. This feels closer to the NCAA Football playoff than it does to the NCAA basketball championship.

Last year, the difference between 24th and 34th was 14 points (approximately 2 extra playoff series won or one extra playoff appearance with an average amount of wins (playoff teams average about 13.5 points per appearance). As someone who finished 29th and one series win away from Round 2, I know it's imperfect, but the whole idea of Round 2 only having 24 owners is to crank up the level of competition as high as it will go. For example, last year there was a division that had ArlenWilliam, discodemo, brianjw and WaitNSee. And they had to do a draft with only each other (they were the Top 4 from Round 1 last year). If we split Round 2 into 48 participants (and therefore two leagues), there are less head-to-head clashes to determine the overall winner.

Well said.

Many of this site's top owners can do well enough in round 1, averaging 85+ wins per team. But then some of those who barely squeak into Round 2 find themselves in the unusual position of having a bunch of sub-.500 teams, paying against the best of the best.

It's like moving up levels in poker cash games. You can be an overall winning player at $1-$2 or $2-$5.... but when you move up to $10-$20, you get crushed.
