I'm trying to determine how much makeup should factor into my draft decisions. After digging through old threads, it seems like most don't let a low makeup deter them from drafting a player. Am I correct in understanding that, with good coaching and a maxed-out training budget, prospects can still reach their projections, but they're most likely to decline sooner?

The two pitchers I'm considering have projected makeups of 62 and 53. Too low for a top pick? All five players I'm considering are college players and I have $20M in COL. I'd prefer a pitcher over a bat, but the low makeups scare me.

Pitcher A: 86 OVR | 29 DUR | 88 HEALTH | 62 MAKEUP
88 STA | 95 CNTL | 66 vL | 88 vR | 84 VEL | 90 GB/FB | 84 P1 | 77 P2 | 47 P3 | 78 P4 | 30 P5

Pitcher B: 83 OVR | 27 DUR | 95 HEALTH | 53 MAKEUP
78 STA | 94 CNTL | 90 vL | 78 vR | 35 VEL | 64 GB/FB | 86 P1 | 72 P2 | 74 P3 | 70 P4

The three bats I'm considering seem like the safer route. I guess this opens up the position need vs. best available can of worms as well.

Player C: 89 OVR | 76 RANGE | 85 GLOVE | 93 STR | 90 ACC | 87 DUR | 73 HEALTH | 81 MAKEUP
71 CON | 80 PWR | 79 vL | 83 vR | 57 EYE | 77 RUN | 76 SPEED

Player D: 88 OVR | 63 RANGE | 59 GLOVE | 73 STR | 63 ACC | 69 DUR | 95 HEALTH | 73 MAKEUP
81 CON | 98 PWR | 87 vL | 100 vR | 72 EYE | 94 RUN | 88 SPEED

Player E: 86 OVR | 60 RANGE | 52 GLOVE | 54 STR | 55 ACC | 76 DUR | 99 HEALTH | 76 MAKEUP
81 CON | 94 PWR | 93 vL | 80 vR | 85 EYE | 80 RUN | 74 SPEED

Right now, my top 5 are ranked:
1. Pitcher A
2. Player C
3. Player D
4. Player E
5. Pitcher B

Thoughts?

what's your scouting budget?

$20M in COL, and all five are college players.

To me it's Pitcher A. His makeup is fine and his health is good. I'm more concerned about Player C's health than Pitcher A's makeup. Players D and E are awesome hitters but they don't play premium positions and their durability is low so you won't get anywhere near a full season out of them if they play the field.

Pitcher A's vsR is elite and IF his projections are accurate (with 20mil they might be) then he's going to be a top of the rotation starter which trumps everything else for me. Pitcher B is close, he also looks elite and I wouldn't be worried about his makeup. Even if he does decline faster, he'll still give you 10 seasons of effective pitching as a starter.

I have them:
1. A
2. B
3. C
4. D
5. E

So a 73 health scares you more than a 52 makeup? Interesting. Appreciate the feedback.

53 isn't terrible, it's not like 20. I've got several guys with 30-40 makeup who have progressed well. I think your training budget, coaching, playing time, and proper minor league progression have more to do with it. It's not ideal, but for me I want the ace instead of the solid hitter who may or may not be able to play shortstop.

But this is your team so take who you want

To me, A and B are a tossup. A has a better righty split and will get you more innings. B's overall splits are better (though pitchers do face more righties), and his pitches are significantly better. A's P5 at 30 could work against you too.

Yea having four pitches at 70+ (and none below) is a big advantage for Pitcher B.

Is player D righty or lefty? Throwing and hitting. He looks like a hall of fame hitter but you will probably only get 115 games or so from him at 100%. Pitcher A also has 90 GB/FB rating which is huge.

Player D is a switch hitter, lefty thrower. Keep in mind I play in a -2,-2,-2.-2,-2 ballpark. Does that change anything?

Tough one, I would still pick A but D is intriguing. Probably the best hitter in the league if you get him. Just noticed he is a speed demon as well. Tough call.

D is a switch? Jesus, add 5-10 points to his VLH/VRH splits. That guy is ridiculous even at 69 DUR.

I wonder how the new scouting is factoring into this. I wouldn't expect more than 3 of those caliber of players to be in the same draft. The fact that this only includes college players seems crazy to me.

I agree. Loaded class for sure, at least the top five.
