Giving GD A Try Again Topic

I thought I would give GD a try again after having not played at all since the 3.0 interface was completed. I can't remember much, if anything, about the game now. I have played 10,000 HD games since then, so I hope it comes back to me :)

I see bhaz's playbook link. Is yatzr's tool still out there? Time to grab my old spreadsheet and see if it still works.

Any quick tips would be appreciated .. thanks guys.

Come play in Wilkinson. We have a website, twitter, radio show and blogs! Can't beat that!

I'm a long time HD player also but loving GD in my first few seasons. I might switch to only GD depending on how the new HD goes. GD offers so much gameplanning ability compared to HD.

I do have to agree with the poster above though. My limited communication with CS as a new player to GD was very poor. I would hesitate to recommend GD to a new WIS player for that reason.

I might add, when you lose a team through no fault of your own the recruiting budget is zero. Wis will not make this right because the customer is always wrong.

I think the OP asked for quick tips. Here are a few:
1. Yatzr's tool (gdreports.com) and the GUESS report (guess.gdreports.com) are still out there and very effective, especially if you donate.
2. You have very limited control of things in D3, so few coaches stay there after their first season.
3. The current engine doesn't seem to be as easy to "game" as past versions. Some coaches are successful with all-pass offenses, but they do not guarantee victory.
4. Because the worlds are so empty, your recruiting strategy will need to be adjusted to reflect that. Plan on battling SIMs and plan on knocking them off early before battling them gets too expensive.

I see that some coaches are only practicing 1 Offensive and 1 Defensive formation (based on the Formation IQs). The player I looked at specifically was pete_61 at Eastern Kentucky in Wilkinson. He seems to only Practice 3-4 and Trips.

Is this now the norm? Only practice one set for offense and one set for defense?

There are many paths to winning. I have won with 2 off and 2 def formations. Currently I am playing 2 off for some of my teams and 1 off and def formation for others. Number one path to winning is talent.

I subscribe to this theory and have bounced ideas of Pete numerous times. I believe one offense and one defense is the way to go. That being said there are several very successful coaches who would/do mop the floor with me that run their teams different.

You can now customize lineups/players within the same formation if you want to instead of having to use multiple formations to rotate players

So if you use only Trips formation... you can create different lineups like Trips Super Gangster, Trips Pass to TE, Trips Always run or Trips Hurry Up if you want to...
Right, I see that you could (for example) replace one or two of your OLBs with a safety/cover guy and put them in coverage from a 3-4 or 4-3 against passing teams, etc. Which gives you DBs in coverage. I guess that is worth a try.

Same on offense. You could replace a TE with a WR, etc. And therefore turn a ProSet or I-Formation into a more passing offense for some instances .. while still getting the benefit of extra IQ by not splitting up the formation practice time.

HMM .. is there any way to play a WR at TE?

Of to play a Safety at OLB?

I don't see any way to do that. I would very much like to do it though.

How are you guys able to play players line up in formations out of their normal postions? I'm only able to select some type of TE to line up at TE.

That is what I WANT to do .. doesn't look like I can.

You can't play players out of position, but you can designate certain players by their roles to play in specific formations tailored to take advantage of their strengths.
For example: Throwing deep, you only have your fastest WR's in that particular formation, leaving a slower guy (who might have great Technique) out. Another example: Running inside, you play only your strong OL, not necessarily the faster, pass blocking OL.
