Fat guys can be in good condition.

You know what's harder than throwing 70 pitches in 2 1/2 hours? Throwing 70 punches in 15 minutes.

David Wells didn't struggle. Bartolo Colon. I could run off a ton of football players. Fat guys don't run marathons because it's constant movement. Baseball is not constant movement. A pitcher exerts himself for 15-20 times over 10 minutes. Then gets to rest. It's not the condition of the body. It's the condition of one arm.

FWIW, I tried a 40+ baseball league 10-12 years ago. Other than most of the players being terrible ballplayers making the game unbearable, there was way too much standing around. I could have weighed 300 lbs and not got winded. As I said yesterday, I run far more playing softball and in half the time. Pitches are thrown every 10-15 seconds and most batters see about 2 pitches per AB. An entire inning can be played in the time it takes 1 batter to get an outcome in baseball.

I'm sure guys who play 162 have to be in good condition. A guy who plays once a week for 6 months does not.

Those pro pitchers, even the fat ones, can definitely run 10+ miles no problem. With only a handful of exceptions they're probably doing it after every start to help process the lactic acid buildup and minimize arm soreness later.

Well, yeah, I guess I downplayed the condition of the legs. But no one looks at Colon and says "Yeah, he's good shape." Pitchers probably are in better condition than position players(in general). Fielder and Sandoval are/were fat *****. Do you think they could run 10 miles? In a reasonable time?

I'm not vouching for position players at all. I'm just saying that anybody who played baseball to any kind of reasonably high level realizes that the overwhelming majority of pitchers, at least starting pitchers, hit the treadmill (if there is one) after the game.

OK, I ignored WTF pitchers did because I didn't care. And, back in my day, nobody lifted. You stretched and maybe took a light jog.

That said, I was never a MLB player. I have no idea what they did in 1982. I imagine a couple of lines before heading to the bar. Do you know what MLB players did in your day?

I think it's funny that 66 is a nice comfortable speed to throw without warning up but 73 or 74 is ridiculous and impossible.
I said "I USED TO throw...", as in back when I was in my 20's and 30's and cared about winning stuffed animals.

I probably threw BP for my son's baseball team around that range too, but had to warm up for a while.

You're mixing up your old fat guys.
I'm not mixing you up, I'm laughing at the reaction (or lack thereof) to you saying you used to throw 66 nice and easy without warming up.

If you could throw a nice and easy 66, you could have easily bumped it up to 70+. I'm waiting for miketrump23 to freak out about that.

I called Roger Clemens. He said "What sort of idiot throws cold? Some ******* clown at a guess your speed booth? Hope that dumb bastard was drunk. I don't throw cold and I doubt I'd hit 74 if I did."

I call BS on this. There is no way Colon or Sabathia could run 10 miles.

He didn't say how long it would take them.

I'm sure Colon and Sabathia could both run 10 miles - in a format where they get to run from pizza place to pizza place, having a slice and beer at every stop. (We actually had something similar locally. It was huge for a while.)

I bet they can do it. I don't think they ever do, though.

I bet both Colon and Sabathia have run 10 miles. probably more over the course of their careers> All at one time? I doubt it.

Dude your the best..... you actually said "I didn't hit 75 cold..... but...... I did hit 74"
Well, yeah, 75 seems like a stretch.
In this same vein;

I talked to colon, he told me that although he can't run 10 miles, he can definitely run 9.8 miles
