If I recall correctly, Manning got some **** for checking into a run play in a crucial game. Many felt he was a coward for not taking the game in hands.

Maybe EM was just a coward.

No one is ever gonna say "I was there when Edgar took the walk so Buhner could hit."

"Great" walks are quickly forgotten.

If any DH makes it into the hall, David Ortiz deserves to be there before Edgar Martinez.

Tons of punters belong in the HOF over Ray Guy.

Not to crush BL's narrative but no one said "He walked too much". A few of us like our best hitters to swing the bat not take pitches.

"Pass it on to the next guy" is a nice team slogan. But most people would prefer he swing the bat. Was Ortiz passing it on to Ramirez or hitting the ******* ball?

Well, you seem to be compartmentalizing my argument.

1. I think he played long enough and I think he had a nice run of "peak years." HOF eligible.
2. He was a pretty good hitter but, unfortunately, he didn't play the field. That's a mark in the bad column.
3. He was a 3-4-5 hitter but, IMO, he walked a great deal. Was he pitched around? Unlikely with A-Rod and Griffey in the line-up. Bad, IMO.
4. It's not like when he swung, he made connection. He struck out once every 6 AB. Bad.
5. We're speculating but we seem to agree he became a DH to lessen the risk of injury. Bad.

You listed reasons for not voting for Em for the Hall of fame and included "he walked a great deal...Bad."

I don't know how you could interpret that any way other than "he walked too much."

And then you tried to defend that stupidity for like 50 pages.

Also, Ortiz has more career walks than Martinez did.

So, yes, Ortiz did "pass it along" to whoever was behind him plenty of times.

Which is great, because not making an out while adding a base runner is a great thing to do.

Welp. "Walked too much". Seems like that's going on with Votto this year. "Walked too much". Even though he has over a .500 OBP with RISP

The knock on Martinez was that he didn't play defense.

Martinez is a better overall offensive player than Ortiz. And he played over 2x as many defensive innings in his career as has Ortiz.

If Martinez is not in the HOF, then no ******* way should Ortiz be in.

And Martinez does not belong.

Ortiz has almost 100 more career IBBs than Edgar. Without those EM has more walks.

Ortiz also has about 1500 more career PAs.

2 1/2 years ago? You take the internet too seriously. Maybe go outside, don't warm up and crank out some 75 MPH fastballs.
9/14/2016 2:00 PM
Mike NOBODY claimed they could hit 75.

74, maybe, but 75 was never on the table.
9/14/2016 2:01 PM
My bad. Cold 75 does seem ridiculous while 74 is reasonable. Carry on.

So walking 13% is fine but walking 15% isn't?
