Rule 5 Claim off Waivers Topic

If there is a Rule 5 player on waivers, what happens if you claim them? do they have to be put on your major league roster and stay there for the entire season? or can you sign them and assign them to the minor leagues right away?

As far as I know, a Rule 5 claim wipes out waiver status. The player must go through all Rule 5 processes before he can be assigned back to the minors.

He retains his R5 status and can only be assigned to your ML roster.

As an alternative, after you win the waiver claim, you can do a R5 offer-back, which will again put him on waivers. If nobody else claims him, and his original team declines the R5 offer back, then he loses his R5 status and you can assign him to the minors if you wish.
