Are you running for office?

Pretty sure your question was whether I'd vote for Clinton or a non-Trump Republican.
I was going somewhere that you obviously would rather not go.

I lean conservative. But I don't care about a lot of Republican platforms. Abortion, SSM, legalizing pot, banning porn, etc, etc. So, if a Dem came along who was more fiscally conservative than the typical Dem, I could see casting a vote for them.

You, on the other hand, are a tried and true liberal. There is virtually nothing that could convince you to cross over at the voting booth.

And you're supposed to be the open-minded one per your party affiliation
I don't mind going there, I just want to make sure you and I are on the same page. I've made the mistake in the past of assuming that the topic had shifted only to find out later that I misunderstood someone's point.

Personally, I'm very liberal. But Democrat politicians don't always align with my preferences. I tend to vote more conservative in local elections and I voted for McCain in the 2000 GOP primary (I was registered as an independent). Clinton is a lot less liberal than I'd like but my only alternative is Trump. And even if the GOP hadn't shot itself in the nuts and had nominated someone else, that person (Buch, Rubio, Cruz, Walker etc) is much, much further away from me on the political spectrum than Clinton.

Things that might surprise you about me:

I think we should have free(ish) trade. I think we should enforce border laws and quickly deport illegal immigrants who commit violent crimes. I think personal income taxes are too high...though I think they are too high at the low end and too low at the high end. I think the ACA has problems that need to be fixed. I think people should be allowed to own guns. I think things like micro-aggressions and safe spaces are dumb.

I might have voted Kasich. None of the other jokers.
I've been saying all along that I'm going to leave the Presidential portion of my ballot blank rather than vote for either Hillary or Trump. I would ONLY vote for Hillary if there was even a slight chance that Trump would win my state (there's not, and that's becoming more and more assured as each day passes).

But in a Facebook discussion last week, somebody called me out on that and made a good point. If I don't vote for anybody for President, then I should not have the right to complain for the next four years if I don't like whoever is elected (i.e., Hillary). And after thinking about that, it's a fair point.

So now I'm strongly considering casting a write-in vote for the ONLY candidate that interested me during this past primary season. And that would be John Kasich.

Mine might be the only vote he gets in my town, in my state, or even in the entire country for all I know. But it would be a vote for President, and one that I could make in good conscience. Really, the only one I could make in good conscience.

So, in a general election, what sort of candidate would force you to vote "R"?
10/12/2016 3:44 PM
Like I said, I would have voted for McCain in 2000.
10/12/2016 3:54 PM
No, you said you voted for him in the GOP primary. I assume you voted Gore in 2000 and against McCain in 2008. Right?
10/12/2016 4:01 PM
You asked "what sort of candidate" I would vote for. 2000ish McCain is one. 2008 McCain went off the rails.

Interesting. I didn't know there was a difference.

I'm sure you'll be glad to point out 6 or 7 things that jumped out at you as he "went off the rails."

Thanks in advance for the reply.

Uh, you voted for him in a primary against other Republicans(assuming you're not full of ****). Have you ever voted Repubican beyond local elections?

I guess I'm not following your point. Had McCain won the nomination in 200, I would have voted for him in that general election. That is the sort of GOP candidate I'd vote for.

As is, I don't think either one of us has voted for the other party's nominee for President since 2000.

Well, I thought I was pretty clear.

Have you ever voted Republican beyond local elections? You know, Senate, House of Rep, or even Governor.

10/12/2016 4:57 PM
Nope. What Senate/Congressional Democrats have you voted for?

People who don't vote should lose their ability to complain about those who are elected, but people who simply vote straight-ticket all the time should lose their ability to vote. It's lazy and irresponsible. Neither Party comes close to having all the "best" candidates. Hard to imagine that somebody who has spent hundreds of hours arguing politics here the last year won't take two minutes to submit a well thought-out and informed ballot.

I've voted against incumbents for the last 6 years. Figure it out.

Donald Trump once saw a child on an escalator and said, “I’m going to be dating her in 10 years”

A new video shows the horrifying moment.
