As it's your first season, I'd recommend focusing on what type of player works/sucks. Player acquisition is secondary because, at this point, you only know who's good or terrible. You win "in the middle" as everyone knows who is an all-star and who belongs in AA.
Mike, I'm curious as to what you mean by this. I have only a few seasons under my belt and still have plenty to learn. Do you mean finding guys that are maybe better than their OA would indicate? And thus finding someone that fits a small piece of the puzzle but adds to up with other "middle" small pieces that together make a strong organization? Thanks

Exactly. You know a hitter with 88/89/96/83/99 C/P/VL/VR/EYE is good. You want 13 of those. You won't get 13 of those. So, if you're fortunate enough to get 3 of them, you still have 9-10 position players to acquire. Maybe you sacrifice O at SS/CF for D. Maybe you take a 52/13/66/12/45 you plays 85+ across the board D to play SS over that 84/56/70/73/70 SS with 81/76/82/81 fielding ratings. The bottom half of your roster is probably more important than the top. In a good world, the front 10-12 on every roster should be close to equivalent. The bottom 5-6 should be pretty much the same. It's those other 7-10 that separates the 75 win team from the 90 win team.
