$184M for Heyward? Regrets, Theo? Now there's a boat anchor on the payroll for 7 more years. He will never live up to that...another guy that Harry would be in the booth saying " I just can't figure it out"... Another good no-signing by Mo...which is the culprit for his hitting woes, his swing, or approach to hitting?

$28.167M in both '17 and '18. Ouch.

Yes, they could win with him, but how many mistakes like this before they have payroll problems similar to what they had before Theo took over...

At some point they'll need to sign Bryant and Rizzo.

Heyward rain delay speech spurs Cubs to championship, Chicago fans agree he's worth every penny.

As a Giants fan, I feel oddly interested in this tardfight. Way back in 2006-7, the Giants signed Barry Zito to a widely ridiculed $126M contract. In 2010, when they went to the World Series, he didn't make the roster (nor did he deserve to)... He suited up and cheered for the team in dugout when they won. In 2012, after another crappy season (actually worse than his 2010 season), he made the WS roster as the last starter, predictably sucked in his first game against CIN, then won the biggest game of his life against STL shutting them out in a possible elimination game, before outdueling Verlander in WS Game One to win the second biggest game of his life.

Point being... EVERY SINGLE GIANTS FAN IS GLAD WE SIGNED HIM and paid him $126M to mostly suck for seven years. The WS title in 2010 erased the pain of the deal, and those two wins in 2012 redeemed him as a pitcher. If the Cubs win, they'll be GLAD they signed Heyward. If Heyward makes ONE game-saving defensive play during any WS game over the term of his contract, he will be remembered as a hero, and not a bum who batted .100 in September (or whatever).
This. Heyward will be remembered for the inspirational speech during the rain delay, not his ****** performance during the year.

I was, and imagine many others, were hoping Heyward would wake up in clutch situations and become a hero . . . . didn't work.
Little did we know his "clutch" performance would be gathering the team for a meeting during a brief rain delay.
Teammates mentioning this moment at least twice during live post-game interviews, solidifies, to me at least, that Heyward will always be remembered for being that HERO at just the right moment.
Go Cubs"

Well he had to do something, because he was garbage at the plate. Maybe he could have tried getting a hit in a clutch situation, then his speech wouldn't have been necessary.

The rain delay itself saved the season for the Cubs....over crediting Heyward is just knee jerk need to create a hero

Why are you guys so bitter? You sound like you are the ones who sign the checks every month. Get over it. I do not know who you are a fan of but I am a life long Cub fan. We won, you lost, so go **** yourselves

Nobody here ever heard of you until the playoffs...way to be a lifelong fan

Really? This is the center of your world? I was going to Cub games since Roy Smalley was the SS. You on the other hand spend your life jerking off to internet porn sites

I think the Cubs were basically a defeated team going into the rain delay. The weight of 100+ years of billy goats, Bull Durhams, and Bartmans had finally crashed down on them (even though they were still tied). Heyward reminded them that they were the best team in baseball with the most talent. The whole team got energy from his "speech".

Put it this way.... if he went back to the clubhouse and CRIED (like ******* girlfriend-beater Chapman) instead of rallying the troops, they would've slinked back on the field like beaten dogs, and probably lost.

It needed to be done. He was the only one to step up. That's what a "hero" does.

Hero's also perform in the heat of battle.

I'm not the least bit bitter. I just dispute the absolutely asinine comments that because the Cubs won (or because he gave a speech), it suddenly means Heyward's contract is a good one.

It's not. Period.

I agree. I just do not think it takes anything away from the season. AND, the contract has six years left to justify its existence. The only issue worth talking about is SCOREBOARD !
