HOF ballots early returns Topic

@NotMrTibbs is at it again tracking the HOF ballots. Think of it as the premier exit poll during a presidential election. This campaign cycle is has been much more enjoyable!

I really hope Raines gets in this year and doesn't have to wait for the Veterans Committee.

Expansion Era Committee. Whatever it is now...

I think Raines will get a lot of sentimental votes being his last year on the ballot. Should be a large class with Raines, Bagwell, Hoffman, Guerrero, and perhaps even Ivan Rodriguez all getting elected this year!

There are a couple interesting candidates on Today's Game ballot. I'd vote for Lou Piniella, John Schuerholtz, and George Steinbrenner. Mark McGwire feels like a HOFer but won't get in for obvious reasons. It's a shame!

What makes you think Guerrero is going in?

Besides this, he feels like a HOFer and has no PED issues.

Vlad led the league in so many different categories it's mind boggling! The most telling stat, besides missing the 40/40 club by 1 HR in 2002, Vlad led the league in IBB 5 times including 4 straight from 2005-2008.

He's also led his respective league in PA, Runs Scored, Hits, Caught Stealing, Total Bases (x2), GIDP, and recorded over 200 hits in 4 seasons.

He received MVP votes in 12/16 seasons including 11 consecutive from 1998-2008, winning the 2004 AL MVP as a member of the California Angels.

9 All-Star teams and 8 Silver Sluggers later, and we have ourselves a 1st ballot HOFer!!

Since when is "caught stealing" a positive?

Raines, Bagwell, Hoffman, Guerrero, and perhaps even Ivan Rodriguez

Ugh.

Yeah, I'd vote for Raines and Bagwell for sure. Maybe Pudge.

Not a fan of RPs in the HOF and if you vote for Vlad you also have to vote for Sheffield.

Hit it on the nail. Although, wouldn't mind seeing Hoffman in. But not Lee Smith

Vlad obviously goes in at some point in the near future, largely because he managed, without being a "cream of the crop" type guy, to put up a stat line that appeals to both the traditionalists and the statheads. But he's not a cream guy for the Steroid Era. He's a good hitter from a time of numerous great hitters. He retired at least 2-3 seasons away from both 500 HRs and 3000 hits. And the ballot is still really, really crowded. It's a little bit tough for guys to get in right now because there are more than 10 guys who deserve serious consideration for a lot of voters on the list. The majority of voters voted for 10 guys this year, and a lot of them changed a few from the year prior. That just indicates that the voters can't quite make up their minds which 10 guys are the best. And on top of that, we know a lot of voters do prioritize guys closer to dropping off the back end of the list. So while I wouldn't be shocked for Vlad to go in this year, I don't think I'd just assume it.
12/2/2016 12:26 PM
Or put more simply, Guerrero is tied with Gary Sheffield for 6th in career OPS+ amongst the guys on the 2017 ballot. If you go by just OPS he's ahead of Sheffield, so give him 6th-best bat on the list. And if we assume Raines has a good shot, that puts him 7th on the totem pole. And if you further assume that Pudge, Posada, and Kent get some credit for being amongst the best hitters in history at their respective positions, now he's arguably 10th. And that's completely ignoring pitchers. There are at least 3 pitchers on the ballot right now I'd like to see get in (Clemens, Hoffman, Wagner), and Moose and Schilling are close for me and I know a lot of SABR guys really like them. Long story slightly shorter than last time, there's plenty of ways to see a 10-man ballot that doesn't find room for Big Bad Vlad this year.
