Since when is "caught stealing" a positive?
Isn't this where someone (don't know whom, I usually stay outta these arguments) chirps in about if he's getting caught stealing more then that means he's on base more, and producing runs more, which means more lolzWARrulezlolz #notastrikeout, #notadoubleplay

Very strange voting trends so far, but happy to see most writers using all 10 voting slots.

Looks like Edgar & Mussina have gained the most votes, while Curt Schilling and Trevor Hoffman have both lost two votes to writers that voted for them last year.

Even Bonds and Clemens have gained new supporters!

Why people so reluctant to vote for Sheffield.Im guessing he wasnt that likable. So what.I love a slugger who doesnt strike out.My favorite alltime is Stargell, but he had no business getting in on the first ballot. But he was liked a lot & performed well at the end of his career
.

Sheffield was a 'roider. But mostly it's because he wasn't a friendly chap.

And he has no business being in the HOF based on his career.

I don't think he ever gets in, but he probably belongs (or is at least close) based on his performance compared to other HOF outfielders:

Sheffield ~11,000 PA; 509 HR; 140 OPS+; 292/393/514
Stargell ~9000 PA; 475 HR; 147 OPS+; 282/360/529
Winfield ~12,000 PA; 465 HR; 130 OPS+; 283/353/475
R Jackson ~11,000 PA; 563 HR; 139 OPS+; 262/356/490
Clemente ~10,000 PA; 240 HR; 130 OPS+; 317/359/475
Kaline ~12,000 PA; 399 HR; 134 OPS+; 297/376/480

Stargell had a better OPS+ and Jackson hit more HR, but you could make a reasonable argument that Sheffield was the best offensive player out of that group.

I bet I wouldn't miss Winfield or Clemente in the HOF. Kaline either but he's old school so I'm not as comfortable throwing them out.

Maybe you wouldn't, but that doesn't really matter. The standard of who should be a Hall of Famer is determined by who has already been selected as a Hall of Famer. By that standard, Sheffield is, at least offensively, a Hall of Famer. With the main arguments against him being his horrendous defense and steroids.

LCD argument. Fair enough. Want to list the 3 SS who weren't better offensively than Rizzuto? Let's start a march to get those guys in!!!!

Well, it's not LCD. I didn't compare Sheffield to Rice or some questionable veterans selection. Those guys (Stargell, Jackson, Winfield, etc) are widely recognized as legitimate Hall of Famers.

Like it or not, that's the standard.
