12 Random Pages $70m cap - NEED AN ALTERNATE Topic

League # MLB117559

It’s time once again for those little stocking stuffers under the tree … my Twelve Random Pages league. Inspired by the random page generator from www.baseball-reference.com, this league starts with each owner being assigned 12 random pages. For each assigned page, you must choose two players for your roster. Your 25th man can be ANY PLAYER'S 2016 SEASON.

Your stadium has to be home to one of your players in his chosen season [note that this rule includes your wild card 25th man, so you can play anywhere if you really want to]. This season I am going to lower the salary cap to $70 million so the randomly drawn players will play a bigger role on their clubs. Standard 24-team, six-division format with the wild card. Yes to trades; no to waiver wire, and no to the DH.

Usually, the random pages are player pages or team pages, in which case:

For a player page, you may select any sim-eligible season of that player’s career, plus one of his teammates from the SAME season you select.

For a team page, you may select any two sim-eligible players for that season of their career ONLY.

Simple enough - but the random page generator is completely random, so sometimes you may get odd pages like “1914 Federal League Third Base” or “Players Who Died in Mississippi” or “University of Southern Mississippi”. Most of these have obvious ramifications, but in any less obvious cases I’ll make it clear what the ground rules are when you receive your 12 pages.

Last but NOT least, owners sometimes draw a player page for a player who never had a sim-eligible season. My take on this is that the baseball gods want this player to finally get his chance to shine, so the rules for non-sim players are as follows:

a) You draft a 200k player to hold a spot on your 25-man roster for the random player assigned.

b) You may choose any teammate of this player from any season they were his teammate for your second player assigned to this page.

c) When you enter your roster, you will be allowed to claim an average, pick-your-own AAA player who will replace the 200k player. The AAA player must bat from the same side as your random player, and play the same positions and ONLY the same positions as your random player. Otherwise, there are no limitations on your choice.

d) Note that the pick-your-own AAA is ONLY used for players with no sim-eligible seasons. If you draw three such players in the draft, you get three AAA choices. If you don’t draw any, you don’t get any. An average AAA player is going to be much more valuable than the 200k roster slot he's taking up, so you should use these guys to your advantage!

e) Before Opening Day, swap out your AAA player for the 200k player holding his roster spot, and then re-name your AAA player for the player you were assigned by the randomizer. The AAA player should stay on your roster for the entire season … this rule is not supposed to give certain teams more than 25 players they can use on the season.

On the next post, I’ll show a sample roster so you can see what they look like - and what an urnuly roster-building exercise this can be! For that very reason, when you do come up with your 25-man roster, you should post it here so everyone can verify it's legal.

Who wants their 12 random pages? First person to jump in may also randomize 12 pages for me.

A sample random draw:

1. box score 10/26/2005 White Sox at Astros - World Series Game 4 [pick any two players who played in the game, 2005 season only]
2. 1883 New York Gothams pitching - obviously, you can't take their 1883 seasons, but you can take any two of them in any sim-eligible season they had - and actually, Tip O'Neill and Monte Ward were two of their pitchers
3. * P Brian Sackinsky 1996 Orioles [never had a sim-eligible season, so pick a 200k temp, and one of his teammates from the 96 Orioles]
4. 1942 New York Giants pitching

5. P Jim Korwan 1894-97
6. 3B Scott Cooper 1991-97
7. 1943 St. Louis Browns batting [anyone on this page, includes pitchers]
8. 1937 National League Outfield [any two guys who played an inning in the OF that year, can be used at other positions]

9. 1B Davey Crockett 1901 Tigers
10. 1938 Major League Baseball New Debuts [any two players who debuted in 1938, that season only]
11. Del Rice manager page [you can take any player from any team he managed - in this case, the 1972 Angels]
12. 1971 New York Mets trades & transactions [take any two players listed in their 1971 seasons, even if they were traded for each other]

I will try to build a $70m team with this collection of pages as an example, and post it below, but this is NOT my team. Someone else must generate my squad.

Looks like I'm the first one in. I'll have 12 pages for you shortly. Last time I played this, I got lucky with my team, "Everybody Loves Olmo". Can lightning stoke twice?
12/18/2016 9:35 PM
Ok, commissioner, let's see what you can do with this:

1.1977 AL fielding- centerfield
2. Jim Turner
3. 1989 NY Mets Lineups
4. P. J. Forbes
5. Jack Wanner
6. 1883 Buffalo Bisons
7. Tom Wieghaus
8. Walter Mueller
9. 1948 MLB Transactions
10. 1989 St. Louis Cardinals Lineups
11. Yearly League Leaders- fielding - pitchers: Def. Games as P
12. Harvey Kuenn as manager
12/18/2016 9:38 PM
dcmatcheck: Welcome back! Hopefully a few of our other competitors from last time will join in. In the meanwhile, you've got plenty of time to build your team from the following:

1. 1966 NY Yankees Batting Orders [includes starting pitchers]
2. SS Roger Metzger 1970-80
3. 1974 National League Standings and Head-to-Head [any two players from the same NL team, 1974 season only]
4. * P Matt Zieser 1914 Red Sox

5. 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates Schedule and Results [this page shows the winning pitcher, losing pitcher and save for every game the Pirates played that year, up to the postseason - so you can pick any two pitchers listed, from either the Pirates or their opponents]
6. 1999 San Diego Padres Batting Orders
7. P Mike Henneman 1987-96
8. * C Whitey Gibson 1888 Philadelphia Athletics

9. C John Marzano 1987-98
10. C-3B Alex Trevino 1978-90
11. 2B Jack Conway 1941-48
12. OF Beau Allred 1989-91

So you've got a shortstop, a closer, a catching platoon, and a lot of cap space! Good luck!

2. 1978 Chicago Cubs batting
3. OF Dino Restelli 1949-51
4. P Rickey Keeton 1980-81

5. P Fred Klobedanz 1896-1902
6. 2000 Atlanta Braves roster
7. C Johnny Bucha 1948-53
8. P Cecil Butler 1962-64

9. * OF Adam Shabala 2005 Giants [non-sim player, so take a 200k player on your roster, who you'll replace with a pick-your-own AAA outfielder later]
10. box score 4/23/2010 Cardinals at Giants
11. SS Bunny Fabrique 1916-17
12. * P Tom Makowski 1975 Tigers [non-sim player; see above]

I'm trying to imagine if a guy named "Bunny Fabrique" was trying to work his way to the major leagues today, whether he could ever stand the harassment!

My favorite league ever. Count me in!!!

1. 1981 Montreal Expos Schedule & Results [two pitchers who had a decision or a save, for the Expos or against them]

3. P Earl Moseley 1913-16

reddtrain: I hope we're still your favorite league after this draw:

1. P Paxton Crawford 2000-01
2. * OF Gene "Half Pint" Rye 1931 Red Sox [non-sim player; see rules above].
3. P Brandon Morrow 2007-16
4. OF Clyde Vollmer 1942-54

5. 1985 NL Batting Leaders [any two players listed on page; lots of categories, incl. a few where pitchers sneak in]
6. * C Chris Tremie 1995-2004 [played 4 seasons but never got 50 AB; lots of teammates to choose from]
7. 1972 St. Louis Cardinals roster
8. Chicago White Stockings (1871-75) Team Yearly Batting Stats [obviously, you can't use their 1875 stats, so you can take any two players from those teams in any season of their career]

9. 1951 Chicago White Sox batting, pitching & fielding
10. 1966 Los Angeles Dodgers Schedule & Results [two pitchers who had a decision or a save, for the Dodgers or against them]
11. 1885 New York Metropolitans (American Association) trades & transactions
12. * 2B Ed Lyons 1947 Senators [non-sim player, see instructions above]

I'm sure none of us had ever heard of "Half Pint" Rye, which has to be one of the great nicknames. He was 5' 6" but had 26 HR in the minors the season before, so you'll need an AAA guy with some power to represent him.
