Broken Defensive Player? Topic

Not sure if his ratings will look the same to people outside the World, but Sun Gong is 86/77/96/90. He has 442.1 innings at 3B, 22.0 at LF, 6.0 at CF, and 28.1 at RF.

He's got a bunch of errors at 3B, but whatever, those things happen sometimes even to good fielders. More troubling, he has zero plus plays, at any position.

To demonstrate that I don't have extreme flyball pitchers, the other players who have logged innings at 3B have 10 plus plays in 246.1 innings (81/79/89/93) and 2 plus plays in 148.2 innings (88/83/95/92). With (roughly) the same staff and park last year, my combined 3B accounted for 34 plus plays.

So what's up?

He only has 56.1 innings other than 3B and it looks like 9 chances. I don't think I'd put too much into his lack of plus plays in the OF.

And thoughts on the 3B time?

I've seen it before but you'd think that guy is a GG-3B. No plus plays in what amounts to 50 games is odd. And his RF is 14th in the league while your GB/FB is around league average. It doesn't quite add up. I can usually find something but it's not there.

The dreaded HBD rookie yips, right Mike? haha

That guy should have at least double the plus plays than errors at 3B given enough time. Hell, he could play a respectable SS if he had to.

I've got the 2nd best SS in one of my leagues (90/91/96/87) and he's 16th in fielding% through 70 games this season. Five of my guys errors came in an eight game stretch. Meanwhile guys with 80/82 GLV/ACC have 2/3 the errors. It's frustrating but that's how it goes sometimes.

12/21/2016 12:47 AM - Support ticket submitted, asking them if everything was working properly with him.
12/21 (daytime sometime) - Ticket goes from Pending to In Progress
12/22 AM cycle - Sun Gong records his first plus play of the season (at 3B).

But nothing was wrong. It was a pure coincidence. ;)

I understand that you don't answer "what's wrong with X player?" questions. And I understand that you don't share when something actually is wrong with a player after a fix is made.

But please take a moment to look at Sun Gong. Given his defensive ratings, it is unfathomable to me (and to other very experienced owners) that he is incapable of recording a single plus play.

Thank you for your time.

He makes a lot of solid plays, but not high enough to earn the + designation.

It sometimes depends on where you have the player in the field. Even with the highest fielding ratings, they may not make as many + plays at one position over another.

Thanks.

I have found that when I have infielders/catchers with exceptionally strong arms, the range/glove of the 1B really matters (I like 60/60 at least). Try putting a better fielder at 1B and see what happens.

As a general rule, +/- plays are based on the range rating. Errors (or lack there of) are based on glove and arm accuracy ratings.

HBD is a game based on statistical probabilities. With 10s of thousands of players total across all HBD worlds, having a few odd balls not performing to what their ratings are is to be expected. Bummer when it is your player under-performing but most can point to a player who over-performed his ratings so in the end it all tends to average out.

With Sun Gong's regular season over (he's resting now), here's how he ended up (without any change to the player at 1B).

Pre-Ticket
~450 3B innings, 0 plus plays

Post-Ticket
~270 3B innings, 6 plus plays
He also picked up a plus play at 2B.
