Juice’s Holiday Tournament!
Guys, back in May of 2015, I said I was going to take a long break from forming any more leagues. Well, after more than a year and a half, that break is over. This tournament won’t be as “grand” and “huge” as some of my previous adventures, but it will still be quite a stretch. Here’s how it’s going to work:
FOUR ROUNDS: Round 1 = 18 Leagues / Round 2 = 8 Leagues / Round 3 = 3 Leagues / Round 4 = 1 Championship League
The winner/champion of Round 4 will receive $160 in credits from WHATIFSPORTS.
The runner-up from the Round 4 World Series will receive $80 in credits from WHATIFSPORTS.
Same as most of my tournaments: No Gift Certificates or Money needed to join - just a team to enter!
This is how Round 1 is going to work:
Check out the choices below. See which franchises are in which league. Once you find your particular liking, you select one of the years from that franchise that you like. There are three different categories to choose from for each franchise. Group 1 contains the best teams (as per the Pythagorean Win-Loss percentage listed in Baseball-Reference.com) for that franchise. Group 2 contains the middle of the pack from all of that franchises seasons. Group 3 contains the worst of the worst – the most disgusting seasons by that particular franchise. There will always be more choices than teams needed so no one should feel like they’re getting “stuck” with a season they don’t want.
The team you finish with will be comprised of one season from each Group for that franchise. For example, you may end up with 1994 (Group 1), 1964 (Group 2), and 1924 (Group 3) for the Braves.
Leagues 1 through 16 are comprised of one franchise each. Leagues 17 and 18 consist of all the expansion franchises since 1961. In those two leagues, the above rules still apply. If you pick 1980 for the Royals (a group 1 season), your other two seasons must be from Group 2 and Group 3 of the Royals. Even though there are different franchises playing in those two leagues, you can’t mix the seasons of two or more franchises to build your roster. Also, there’s no limit on the number of each of those franchises are used. There are eleven seasons in each group for the Royals so, in reality, you could have 11 Royals teams in that league of 24. Chances of that happening are slim though – I’m just trying to make a point. Once there’s 24 owners signed up for Leagues 17 and 18, they’ll operate just like the other 16 leagues – no matter if there’s 5 Diamondback teams built or none.
League Alignment will be according to the highest to the lowest total Pyth W-L Perct. - with the highest four being in the N.L. East and working down the page from there.
EDIT (12/23/2016): IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER: From those three groups, you must have at least $25M worth of players from each of your three seasons, BUT you can not roster more than $45M worth of players from any one season.
That’s 24 players. Once all 24 owners have selected three seasons to make up their roster, that will be 72 seasons gone. After that, there will be a Free-Agent draft for your 25th player. The remaining seasons not selected AND the seasons that weren’t originally offered will become the Free Agent pool. Clones are only allowed on one team in this round - the Astros squad in League 18. Since they only have three seasons listed, it's unavoidable. As far as the rest of us, obviously, two (or more) different owners may have the same player on their roster (just not the same season of that player) but there won’t be any one Yankee squad with two Babe Ruth’s on the roster.
When you sign up, select ONE season for that franchise. Once 16 owners have signed up for that particular franchise/league, a snake-style draft will occur for the other two seasons and the Free Agent pick. Once 16 owners have signed up, the first round of the draft will be from the 16th owner signed up back up to the 1st owner signed up. In other words, your first two seasons to use will be selected in a 1-16, 16-1 format. The third round of the draft (when you select your third season to use) will be determined by the combined Pythagorean Win-Loss percentage of the first two seasons selected. You won’t know the draft order until I’ve done all the addition and posted it in the draft thread. The fourth round of each draft (the Free Agent round) will be done the same way. The owner whose three seasons have the lowest combined Pyth W-L perct. Will have the first pick of the Free Agents – and so on down the line.
When you first sign up, it doesn’t matter if you select a season from Group 1, Group 2 or Group 3. If you see a season in Group 2 that you think is heads and tails above all of the other Group 2 seasons, you might want to go that route first – knowing that you’re still going to get a pretty good season from Group 1.

You may use either partial or full season stats of any player who had a split season - as long as the stats indicate it was for your franchise.
Stadium – All teams/leagues will use a stadium that their franchise called home during one of the three seasons they used to build their roster.
Who Moves On?
Once Round ONE is complete, the owners who own the four playoff teams in each league will earn a spot in Round Two. 4 x 18 = 72 spots. That leaves 120 spots to fill. The final 120 spots will be awarded to the teams who had the most wins across all 18 leagues (who didn't make their league's playoffs). The tie-break (should it come into play) will be (1) Most Home Wins, and (2) Most Runs Scored.
