Interesting conversation. For many there are no right answers. Here are my thoughts
1. Edgar Martinez is/was the best DH since MLB adopted the DH rule. Frank Thomas & David Ortiz were also great DH's. The DH is a position in MLB. Thus all three belong in the Hall of Fame.
2. The game has evolved over the years. The role of closer could not have been foreseen 100 years ago. But in today's game without a stud closer you will not win the World Series. Rivera, Hoffman, Wagner and Lee Smith all belong in the HOF.
3. Mike Mussina is a top 30 pitcher of all time? As an Oriole fan, I love Mike Mussina but reality is he wasn't even the best pitcher of his era. Randy Johnson, Clemens, Petro, Maddox, best case scenario he was the 5th best of his time. Throw Glavine or Schilling into the mix, Mussina may even drop farther down the list. Does Mussina deserve to be in the HOF...........maybe. He was a very good pitcher in an era of hitters. Tough call.
4. Bonds, Sosa, Clemens, McGuire and more. Simply put steroids were part of the culture of baseball for those years. MLB/Selig chose to turn a blind eye to PED usage. Did not the Sosa/McGuire HR race of 1998 help baseball? Did it not help rebuild baseball after the '94 strike? Selig had to have known about the usage of PEDs in the game but yet for the "good of the game" kept his mouth shut. Only after the fact did he take a stand against "roids". Either allow them all in or block all of them. You can't pick and choose. This also includes Selig. If he can be in the Hall then so can (and should be) Bonds, Clemens.......
Anyways, my 2 bits on the subject.
