Noob Guide to HD - Practice Planning Topic

Coachward just had to troll up another legitimate teaching tool thread.

I use 20 always in the freshman season. I feel like after that it is all player by player basis. I can't recall ever using 20 on guys afterward; however I also have a tendency to start five freshman, it significantly helps build them up.

That's my current Wisconsin plan.
My plans and how I use my team O/D minutes are very different between DI/DII/DIII

Curiosity, why the 7/9 on two players?

Athleticism has really been a sexy attribute for me lately, because it helps immensely on both offense and defense. That said, I almost never recruit anyone with less than black potential in it and almost never have less than twenty practice minutes on conditioning.

interesting perspectives! ward should be reading this thread instead of just linking his videos as if he is ready to mentor us all!

i am probably more like chapel with conditioning, though if you recruit a stud player with minimal growth potential it's an exception of course. i typically use 20 in team off/def unless i have a huge freshman class, and then i'll use 25 at least in the beginning of the season. a couple other things i do:

- most of my players get 0 in study hall after their freshman year.
- i use a lot of 0s in less essential attributes on project players or guys with weaknesses i want to develop quickly, ex: i'll zero out a guard in REB if i need to develop their PER shot.

Benis, I put zero in about half the numbers and my whole team has lost 2 points this year. You don't really need 7 to keep it even.

I zero out my reds and single digits and let the off season handle them. Maybe lose a point around game 20 but that's it. Traditionally go 15 in conditioning. Then just pound minutes at the cores and green and blue. Can gain 50+ team points over a season though mid or upper 40s probably more the norm.

Those are freshmen. I give all freshmen 7 mins study hall 1st semester regardless of GPA. They also have developmental areas outside of Ath/Speed so I put my minutes into those other areas (vs conditioning). I usually go 10 deep so don't need huge staminas.

This is my thinking on Red. Once a players attribute hits RED, I put it at zero. My thinking is, if he does lose a couple of points (rare), it will go back to yellow and I'll know there's some points to gain.

Leaving 8 points on them just to avoid losing a couple of points seems like a waste. There are better use of those 8 points on green, black, or blue categories. At least until their senior year and most/all categories are maxed out and red. Then you can leave the 8 points.

Matter of fact, I like seeing one or two non-core values being red when recruiting. I then know I can max out their core values quicker. Like seeing Blocking red for guards.

Mid-Term
GPA
Cumulative
GPA
Hwang, Marquis Fr. 2.8 0.0
Anderson, Jeffrey Sr. 3.1 2.4
Faber, Mark Sr. 3.4 3.0
Burgos, Randall Jr. 2.8 2.4
Denn, Richard Jr. 3.0 2.8
Fruge, Jimmy Jr. 3.5 3.6
French, Paul Jr. 3.4 3.2
Seay, Abe Sr. 3.0 2.7
Bell, Kenneth Fr. 3.4 0.0
Bradshaw, Kelly Fr. 2.4 0.0
Bradshaw, Mitchell Fr. 2.8 0.0
Jones, Robert Fr. 2.8

No minutes assigned at all. It can be done.

You just need to play off of the high school GPA's also this is the first report, so obviously I'll be putting a few minutes on the 2.4 player.

Probably somewhat anal but I hate to lose points in ANY category for ANY player.
3 minutes practice time for LP and PE ... and 5 minutes practice time for all other categories will keep them from declining (exception very low we, less than 20 which I try not to recruit anyway).

Yeah that is super anal. And silly IMHO.

Would you rather mind losing 1 Reb but gaining 5 Per for a guard? Or lose 1 BH and gain 5 Reb in a big? That's the way I look at it.

None the less, newbies would be wise to know that 3 minutes will prevent decline in LP and PE, and 5 minutes will prevent decline in all other categories, excepting WE's less than 20 ... as a general rule.
