Division-3 School Name Improvements - Master List Topic

Hey guys,
Me again. I put together the list of Division-1 school name changes several months ago that I think has worked out great. The HD admin did a fantastic job with the adjustments in Division-1.

I've noticed that HD has chipped away at improving the school names in other divisions, which is very cool too. Tubular in fact, and pretty righteous.

Anyway, here is a recommended list of additional school name adjustments for Division-3:

HD DIVISION-3

RECOMMENDED ADJUSTMENTS TO SCHOOL NAMES:

Only 80 schools are listed for possible adjustment.

Would like to get the input of others if I've made any mistakes or misinterpretations.

I'm familiar with New England area schools, but in other areas I could be off.

AMERICAN SOUTHWEST
- East Texas Baptist (spell out "East")
- Concordia (TX) (remove comma and remove "Austin", and add TX. For consistency with the group of affiliated Concordia University schools, which I describe down in this list in the Minnesota Athletic Conference list)
- Sul Ross State (spell out "State")
- Texas-Dallas (remove comma, add hyphen), or Texas at Dallas or UT Dallas… but not Texas comma Dallas.

CAPITAL

CENTENNIAL
- Penn State Berks (no comma, no hyphen, spell out State)

CITY OF NY
- New York City Tech (remove period)
- NYU Polytechnic (not sure, cuz it changed names and is an engineering school now, maybe just keep "Polytechnic")

CCIW
- North Central (spell out "North)
- North Park (spell out "North")

COMM COAST
- Eastern Nazarene (spell out "Eastern")
- New England College (add "College", to distinguish it from "U. of New England")
- Wentworth (remove "Tech."… locals just call in "Wentworth").

COMMONWEALTH
- Penn State Altoona (no comma, no hyphen, spell out State)
- Pitt-Bradford (use "Pitt", no comma, add hyphen)
- Pitt-Greensburg (use "Pitt", no comma, add hyphen)

EMPIRE 8
- Rochester Tech (remove period after Tech)

FREEDOM
- Fairleigh Dickinson at Florham or FDU-Florham.
- Penn State Behrend (no comma, no hyphen, spell out State)
- Frostburg State (spell out State)

GREAT NORTHEAST
- Southern Vermont (spell out "Southern").
- Western New England (spell out "Western").
- Johnson & Wales (J&W uses the ampersand, thanks bfflcommish...)

HEARTLAND
- Mount St. Joseph (spell out "Mount", keep the "St.")

IOWA

LITTLE EAST
- Keene State (spell out State)
- Plymouth State (spell out State)
- Fitchburg State (spell out State)
- Framingham State (spell out State)
- Bridgewater State (spell out State)
- Southern Maine (spell out "Southern")
- Western Connecticut State (spell out "Western" and "State")
- Eastern Connecticut State (spell out "Eastern" and "State")
- UMass Boston (remove comma, no hyphen, just a space)
- UMass Dartmouth (remove comma, no hyphen, just a space)

MICHIGAN

MIDWEST
- Illinois College (add "College").
- Rose-Hulman (remove "Tech").

MINNESOTA
- Saint John's (MN) (spell out "Saint")
- Saint Mary's (MN) (spell out "Saint")

- Concordia College (MN)… (add "College" to distinguish this school in Moorhead MN from the group of Concordia "Universities" (in TX, OR, IL, WI, and the Div-2 one in St Paul, Minnesota); and add (MN) though to distinguish in from the Div-2 Concordia "College" in Bronxville New York (in HD it lives in the ECC of Div-2), which is actually affiliated with the group of Concordia U's but is still only a "college").
Note that St. Olaf and St. Scholastica both typically use the "St." abbreviation in their names.

NESCAC
- Westfield State (spell out State)
- Worcester State (spell out State)

NEW JERSEY
- Montclair State (spell out State)

NORTH ATLANTIC
- Castleton State (spell out State)
- Salem State (spell out State)
- Maine at Farmington (remove comma, add "at")
- Maine at Presque Isle (remove comma, add "at")

NORTH COAST

NORTHWEST
- Eastern Oregon
- Lewis & Clark (they seem to like the ampersand)

OHIO ATHLETIC
- Maryville College (add "College" to distinguish from the one in St Louis)

ODAC
- Eastern Mennonite
- Emory & Henry (similar to Lewis & Clark, they seem to like the ampersand)
- Washington & Jefferson (they really love the ampersand)
- note that "Washington and Lee" likes to keep the "and".

PENNSYLVANIA
- Eastern or Eastern University (this will provide eventual consistency throughout both Pennsylvania conferences across Div-3 and Div-2... so i think these groups of schools should drop the "U" and drop all "(PA)" designations... so eventually it will just be "Stroudsburg" and "Shippensburg" and "Edinboro", similar to "Millersville" and "Lock Haven"... tip of the hat to bfflcommish...)

SKYLINE
- Stevens (remove "Tech.", similar to Wentworth)
- Farmingdale State (for some reason, Farmingdale doesn't use the SUNY prefix)
- SUNY Maritime College (remove comma)
- Mount Saint Vincent (spell out "Mount" and "Saint")
- Mount Saint Mary (spell out "Mount" and "Mary")

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA
- Caltech (one word, no period).
- Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (spell out, with hyphens (combined athletic teams of Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd, and Scripps College))
- Colorado College (add College)
- Texas-Tyler (remove comma, add hyphen, consistent with Texas-Dallas, or make it UT-Tyler, or Texas at Tyler)
- UC Santa Cruz (use "UC", with no comma nor hyphen)
- Cal State East Bay (use "Cal State" and separate "East Bay" into 2 words)

ST LOUIS
- Maryville University or Maryville (MO) or Maryville U. or Maryville of St Louis, but not Maryville comma St Louis... i guess just keep it consistent with the Maryville in Tennessee of the Ohio Athletic Conference.
- Dominican (IL) (add "IL" to distinguish it from the NY one)

SUNY
- Buffalo State (spell out State)
- SUNY Oswego (remove comma for consistency)
- SUNY Plattsburgh (I would add the SUNY without the comma, and remove "State")
- SUNY Poly (replace "IT" with "Poly", its newer name)

UNIVERSITY
- Louisiana College (add "College")

UPSTATE

USA SOUTH
- North Carolina Wesleyan (spell out "North")

WISCONSIN
I think these can all be "UW Whatever" without the hyphen, or "Wisconsin at Whatever" by dropping the comma:
- UW Superior
- UW Stout
- UW Whitewater
- UW La Crosse
- UW Oshkosh
- UW Platteville
- UW Stevens Point
- UW Eau Claire
- UW River Falls

or:

- Wisconsin at
Superior
- Wisconsin at Stout
- Wisconsin at Whitewater
- Wisconsin at La Crosse
- Wisconsin at Oshkosh
- Wisconsin at Platteville
- Wisconsin at Stevens Point
- Wisconsin at Eau Claire
- Wisconsin at River Falls

"npb7768",

Thanks for your hard work on this and I look forward to seeing more name changes implemented by WIS at the D3 level!
I can't believe more people haven't responded to your post.

Anyway, my only initial issue would be with the names that you actually recommend be shortened...such as California Lutheran, Fairleigh Dickinson - Florham and all of the schools mentioned in the WISCONSIN conference. I feel that further abbreviation would serve to defeat the purpose (or at least the benefit) of these changes. I suggest that, wherever space allows, we should strive to spell out the full names to limit confusion.

In the PENNSYLVANIA conference, Eastern U. should be changed to Eastern University.

In the GREAT NORTHEAST conference, "Johnson and Wales" could also use that ampersand...make it "Johnson & Wales".

Hey, thanks again bfflcommish!
i either made your recommended changes (like California Lutheran) or i provided them as a second option for the schools you mentioned.

ST. LOUIS: I don't think "Maryville U." should even be listed as an option. The only time that "U." should ever be permitted is when there is not enough space...such is possibly the case with "U. of New England".
