Preview

Linfield - Last season the Wildcats made it to the National Championship, but were unable to bring home the hardware. The Wildcats bring back 8 key players and look to improve on a second place finish in last years invitational. They enter the season ranked 6th in the nation.

Buena Vista - One of the most successful programs over the last two seasons. Supersloth looks to follow up a Final 4 and Elite 8 finish with a championship in the Invitational. Returning 9 players, including 5 seniors, gives them one of the most veteran lineups. The beavers come into the season ranked 9th in the country.

Chestnut Hill - After a disappointing season from a young squad, the Griffins will look to rebound with a much more seasoned roster. Unable to win a game in the invitational last season, the Griffins come in as one of the favorites to come away with the Dice Roll Trophy. The Griffins come into the season ranked 14th in the country.

North Central - Sporting the youngest team in the Invitational with zero seniors, North Central look to be the dark horse in the tourney. The young Cardinal squad will have a tough time with some of the deeper teams, but following 3 consecutive Elite 8 appearances they are not to be taken lightly.

Heidelberg - With HC rco leaving after 45 years under the helm, the Student Princes' are in for a tough string of games. Sim is in for a tough time with a decent roster including 5 seniors.

#6 Linfield Wildcats @ #14 Chestnut Hill Griffins (+1):

- Two of the top teams in the invitational will battle it out on opening night. Last season the Wildcats defeated the Griffins at their place by 12. This year the game is expected to be a much more tightly contested game.

Prediction: Linfield by 3

Heidelberg Student Princes @ North Central Cardinals (-1):

- The youngest team in the invitational will take on sim ran Heidelberg. Opening night is a big opportunity for the Cardinals to start out on the right foot with a win. A win would give the young Cardinals a bunch of confidence moving forward and in control of their own destiny.

Prediction: North Central by 12

Nice! Was actually just about to message you and see if you were doing previews again.

Chestnut needs to redeem themselves from last season's pitiful showing. Not sure how this will go tonight, your team looks stacked. Good luck.

Well, I probably got my one and only win in the tourney. But hey I will take it.

#6 Linfield Wildcats defeats #14 Chestnut Hill Griffins (+1): 83-64

- In an unexpected finish the Linfield Wildcats beat up on a tough Chestnut Hill Griffins team. After bringing back all of his players benis' Griffins were looking to start out strong in front of the home crowd. Unfortunately, they were never able to get anything going. Fred Fenton scored 14 points for the Griffins, but committed 7 turnovers on the night. Clinton Sarris led all scorers with 21 on 9 of 11 shooting.

Play(s) of the game: Down by 2 early in the game, Jordan Lucas (C) hits a nice shot off a great pass. After a turnover Lucas catches an alley and slams in the 360; giving the Wildcats a lead they would not surrender the rest of the game.

Player of the game: Clinton Sarris (JR.) 21 Pts, 3 Reb, 2 Ast and 4 Stl

*Sarris was the MVP of this game last year also.

North Central Cardinals defeats Heidelberg Student Princes (+1): 64-54

- The young Cardinals came out victorious as expected and have hopefully given them something to look forward to as the tourney progresses. With the Cardinals down by 5 at the half, they outscored the away team 31-16 in the second half. Heidelberg was held to 22% shooting from 3 and were unable to capitalize from the free throw line as they shot barely over 50%. Kenneth Koo led all scorers with 14 points on the night.

Play(s) of the game: With just over 3 minutes to go in the game, North Central put the game away when Everett Penny hit the dagger 3 pointer to put the Cardinals up by 12. The three pointer capped a huge second half run.

Player of the game: Earl Scull (JR.) 11 Pts, 4 Reb, 3 Ast, and 2 Stl

#3 Linfield Wildcats (1-0) @ North Central Cardinals (1-0) (+19):

- The two teams that won last night battle on the second day of the invitational as the young Cardinal squard look to see how competitive they can be with one of the top teams in the country. This will be a tall task and seems to be an uneven matchup coming into the night. Given the Cardinals recent success an upset is never out of the question.

Prediction: Linfield by 26

#6 Buena Vista Beavers (0-0) @ Heidelberg Student Princes (0-1) (+36):

- After a bye on opening night Buena Vista looks to come out strong against the weakest team in the field. This game will not be very competitive and will more than likely be a game to truly see how tough this team is.

Prediction: Buena Vista by 28

Going to be a rough year for Buena Vista. I have an experienced team for sure, but lack speed, passing, defense, ball handling, well pretty much everything to be a successful team really. Going to be a rough year for sure...Looking forward to seeing how my team responds to the tough competition of this tourney. Good luck to you all.

#3 Linfield Wildcats (2-0) defeats North Central Cardinals (1-1) (+19): 84-67

- North Central came strong right out of the gates creating a 34-33 lead. The second half was a whole different story as the Linfield Wildcats took over and out scored the Cardinals 51-18 as they pulled out the win. There were more than enough bricks in this game from 3 and free throw line to build a whole neighborhood. Franklin Brown pulled in a double-double with 15 points and 12 boards. Malcolm Land led the scoring with 24 points.

Play(s) of the game: With 13 minutes left in the game and either team having the ability to take control; Clinton Sarris sets up a double screen for Malcolm Land. Land takes the pass from Sarris and drills the 3-pointer. This was the beginning of a 27-6 run which ultimately turned the game in favor of the Wildcats.

Player of the game: Malcolm Land (JR.) 24 Pts, 1 Reb, 3 Ast and 1 Stl

#6 Buena Vista Beavers (1-0) defeats Heidelberg Student Princes (0-2) (+36): 77-67

- Once again, the uncoached Student Princes found themselves on the losing end of the scoreboard. Buena Vista played a very consistent game outscoring Heidelberg by 5 in each half. The Beavers' starters had a tough time hitting their shots, but the bench came out strong scoring 43 of their 77 points. Marc Ramsey led all teams in scoring with 14 points

Play(s) of the game: With the game closed to 4 with under 6 minutes to play; Jeffery Fenske drills a runner down the lane as he is hacked on the play. Fenske was able to finish the 3-point play and create a gap that would not close again.

Player of the game: Christopher Arevalo (SR.) 13 Pts, 3 Reb, 3 Ast and 2 Stl

North Central Cardinals (1-1) @ #6 Buena Vista Beavers (1-0) (-20) :

- Both teams have a similar opponent in Heidelberg with very similar results. Both teams won that game by 10. This could be a much closer game than the line suggests. The Beavers are a tough opponent, but the Cardinals have played well all season long exceeding expectations in this short season. I look for a double digit win by the Beavers, but not as large of a margin as the spread suggests.

Prediction: Buena Vista by 10

#18 Chestnut Hill Griffins (0-1) @ Heidelberg Student Princes (0-2) (+21):

- Both teams are looking for their first win of the invitational, but Chestnut Hill is coming off an impressive win and find themselves ranked once again (#18). The Griffins should not have much to worry about tonight and can put themselves back in the mix with a win.

Prediction: Chestnut Hill by 24

North Central Cardinals (2-1) Defeats #6 Buena Vista Beavers (1-1) (-20) : 71-69

- The young Cardinals continue to impress as they pull off the first "upset" of the invitational taking down the #6 team in the country. The win puts North Central back into the mix with the win. The Cardinals were able to get both starting guards of the Beavers to foul out prematurely, giving them an advantage on an otherwise evenly played game. Christopher Arevalo (Buena Vista) gave a great effort as he scored 19 points on 7-12 shooting. Earl Scull led the Cardinals to a huge win with a great day scoring, passing and grabbing some steals.

Play(s) of the game: The play of the game comes with virtually no time left in the game as Buena Vista is looking for a game-tying or game-winning shot; The Cardinal defense forces freshman, backup SF John Robeson to travel. The Cardinals were then able to run out the last 2 seconds of the game in order to hold onto the win.

Player of the game: Earl Scull (JR.) 13 Pts, 2 Reb, 4 Ast and 3 Stl

#18 Chestnut Hill Griffins (1-1) Defeats Heidelberg Student Princes (0-3) (+21): 77-43

- In a much anticipated blow out; the Griffins of Chestnut Hill did not disappoint. In the largest margin of victory in invitational history, the Griffins held Heidelberg to just 16 points in the second half as they poured in 41 points to give them a 34 point win. Gary Warner was solid all night as he scores 25 points on 9-15 shooting. Fred Fenton also had a solid game with 6/1 Ast/TO ratio while adding 5 steals. The win puts the Griffins back in the mix with two big games coming up to decide the champion of the invitational. This was the Griffins first win in six Dice Roll games.

Play(s) of the game: In a game where it is hard to find the distinguishing play of the game, Chestnut Hill was still able to pull a few together. Andrew Poremski made a Jordan-esqe play in the middle of the second half. Wide open with the game out of hand Poremski throws the ball of the backboard to himself and flies in to finish with the emphatic slam!

Player of the game: Earl Scull (JR.) 25 Pts, 6 Reb, 1 Blk
