Big 12 vs SEC (week 8) #2

1. #11 Oklahoma 58 at #9 Kentucky 48 (week 1)
Oklahoma (toknowpepsi) won last seasons match-up with Kentucky (cimmy426) and went on to win the National Championship. This season Kentucky had the home court and was looking for revenge. Rupp arena was rocking from the start in anticipation of a great game. The Wildcats and Sooners did not disappoint. The Sooners appeared to be out of sync on their first possession and the Wildcats capitalized. What followed was a hard push off foul by Senior William Hill that nearly cleared the benches. When things settled down the teams battled back and forth in the first half as Kentucky's bombers made 4/6 threes and their rebounders controlled the boards. Kentucky lead 25-21 at the half. Kentucky jumped out to a 40-27 lead 6 minutes into the second half and the fans were going crazy. Then the unexplained happened. Call it a curse, loss of focus, or just plain bad luck. Kentucky went ice cold from the field missing layups, dunks, and other shots they had been making all game. The Sooners did their part locking down on defense and taking advantage like Champions do in tough situations. Oklahoma roared back before a shocked crowd. Kentucky never regained momentum. Oklahoma closed out an impressive come from behind victory on the road to win 58-48. Player of the Game was Oklahoma SF Dwain Shanahan with 15 points and 5 rebounds.

Both coaches were out to prove it was no fluke. Baylor came in undefeated. Auburn has home court and looks for revenge after losing at Baylor last season. Baylor came out on the attack but Auburn was up to the challenge. The first half was close with neither team able to gain much of an advantage with the Tigers leading 33-32. At the half Auburn was hitting on 7/13 threes while the Bears countered with 12/15 free throws compared to just 2/2 for the Tigers. In the second half Bojan Zam would nail a couple from downtown to pry open a sliver of light in the paint. Auburn would hold the lead 54-52 with 6:17 left when Silver whacked Auburn's Brown across the head on a shot. scottevans21 was livid and insisted it was a flagrant foul. The refs disagreed and Brown would go on to miss both free throws and not score the remainder of the game. When Auburn's Seifert collected his fourth foul at the 4:01 mark the last domino fell. Baylor made their final move and pulled away. Player of the Game Baylor C Andrew Jaramillo 18 points 5 rebounds 2 assists 1 steal

Arkansas star Swenson was held to 2 points in the first half. The Arkansas fans were rocking the house trying to inspire a rally by their Razorbacks. That along with the halftime speech by willmes got Arkansas moving early and closed it to 31-30. Neither team could pull away and Arkansas rebounded the ball with 11 seconds left down by two. They rushed it back up the court and Koloski found an opening to lay it in and send the game to OT. In the OT Arkansas's Hays attacked the rim relentlessly and the Razorbacks led 70-68. Then Hays picked up his fourth foul trying to block Jones's shot. Hays continued to play but it limited his aggressiveness on offense but they still had Swenson. With eight seconds left the Razorbacks led 75-73. A&M posted up the 6'7" Harrow on the 6' Swenson and it paid off to tie it up at 75-75 and force a second OT. Huskies fans packed the arena looking forward to a great game between perennial title contenders. UConn went on the attack early but Kentucky kept their composure and led 13-11 with 8:30 left in the half. That's when UConn's Jasmin nailed a three and ignited a 20-5 Husky run. Kentucky was only able to trade baskets after that and trailed at the half 44-29. Kentucky started the second half off hot and ripped off a 16-4 run to close it to 45-48. Alabama fans were ready but it was Louisville that started off hot and shot out to a 7-0 lead. Alabama would recover but trailed 21-14 with six minutes left in the half. Endres would start a Tide 12-2 run that would go to the half and leave Alabama with the lead 26-23. Louisville was behind but had far bigger problems. They committed 11 fouls and star C Klaus was held scoreless in the first half. Alabama continued to play lock down defense in the second half and never let the Cardinal offense off the mat. Also Louisville couldn't find anyone who could stop Alabama's forward tandem of Clark and Dick. Player of the Game Alabama PF Darrell Dick 19 points 4 rebounds 1 steal.
3. #19 Tennessee 50 at Providence 56
Tennessee (cjok1051) entered the game undefeated and Providence (starrider19) had been battle tested by two top 25 teams (their only losses). Providence fans have come to expect success and are particularly excited about the potential of this team. Tennessee's Klein started off the scoring with an old fashioned three point play. Then Providence steam rolled the Volunteer shooters and shut them out first part of the first half. At the ten minute mark Providence held a 13-3 lead. The Volunteers would recover but could not string enough baskets together to make a run. The Friars led 28-19 at the half. In the second half Providence went inside to PF Coachman who would respond with 10 points in the half. Providence's SG combo of Pitt and Matson could be seen jawing at their SG counterparts all game and in second half it got to Turner and Klein. St. John's started aggressive by attacking the LSU press from the start. It backfired early when the Tigers rushed out to 7-0 lead. The Storm responded with a tip in, dunk, and open three on consecutive possessions to tie it up. The Tigers then responded with a 15-3 run to pull ahead 22-10. LSU would continue to slowly extend that lead and led 40-23 at the half behind 9 points from PF Jackson. St. John's could never close the gap enough to make it close. LSU kept the pressure on and forced 21 turnovers in the game. Player of the Game LSU SG Alfonso Gutierrez 20 points 3 rebounds 3 assists.
5.. Auburn at Pittsburgh- stockplayer (Pittsburgh) feared scottevans21 (Auburn) and ran away. Game not played due to fear factor.
6. Rutgers 56 at Miss. St. 58
Rutgers (alebear) and Mississippi State (zoomvsf) were looking to make a statement to the selection committees with a win. This could be one of those nonconference games that decides which bubble teams get in and which ones are out in the committees eyes. The Bulldogs fans were fired up. The Knights didn't care and went right at the Bulldogs from the start. The Bulldogs tried to counter with a very deliberate offense. Rutgers got off to the early 5-0 lead before Mississippi State could get on the board. The Bulldog's star Wilson scored five of the next six points to set the crowd on fire. Rutgers Menke didn't back down and had 7 points of his own in the first half. The second half started with Rutgers holding a 26-23 lead and it looking like the Menke-Wilson matchup would decide the game. Mississippi State's Griffith picked up an early third foul and the Bulldogs fans became a little nervous as Rutgers tried to take advantage inside. Backup Walter didn't let his team down and kept up the intense defense around the basket. With 16:15 left in the game Rutgers led 33-30. That's when the cracks in Rutgers young guns began to show. Walter broke free and was going for a layup when Knight's Pankowski shoved him into the stands. Walters was clearly not himself after that and missed both free throws badly. Bulldog's Travis Taylor would send a message of his own by way of a hard forearm to Pankowski's head as he tried to get around Taylor's pick. The inspired Bulldogs would rally and the game was tied after Menke made 1 of 2 free throws. The Knights quickly covered Wilson and the ballhandlers for the Bulldogs off the miss. Undaunted 7'0" center Griffith would take the rebound and lumber coast to coast to lay it in with four seconds left and was fouled. He appeared to be winded and barely touched the rim on the missed free throw. After a desperation heave the game was over and Bulldogs fans stormed the court. Player of the Game Bulldogs PG Gregory Wilson 18 points 2 rebounds 1 steal.
7. Arkansas 79 at West Virginia 54
Both teams entered the game struggling and needing a win. Arkansas (willmes) had lost two in a row and West Virginia (cats421991) had lost 4 of 6. West Virginia tried to control the ball so their nine man rotation could keep pace with Arkansas's 12 man rotation. West Virginia's physical zone kept the game close at halftime and the Razorbacks led by two 31-29. The score was 35 all when Arkansas would explode with a 26-9 run that would be too much for the Mountaineers to overcome. Player of the Game Arkansas PG Gregory Swenson 21 points 2 rebounds 3 assists 1 steal.
8. Georgia 70 at Villanova 64 (week 9)
These were two teams going in opposite directions. Georgia (panapanthers) entered the game on a seven game win streak and Villanova (Sim) had dropped 6 of 8 to open the season. Villanova's Vogelsberg would nail a three out of the gates to let the fans know the Wildcats were going to play hard for them today. After a Whitchurch tip in Nova led 12-8 and a huge upset appeared in the making. The crowd was standing on their feet when Worrell went up for a dunk shortly after that. It was not to be. Out of nowhere Bulldog Stabler came flying in and swatted the dunk attempt. The Georgia bench jumped to their feet cheering. The Bulldogs would score the next 14 points and create some distance. The Wildcats clawed their way back in and trailed 31-29 at the half. In the second half Georgia would pull away and Nova would continue to claw their way back each and every time but never able to take lead. Player of the Game Georgia SG James Hesser 18 points 1 rebound 3 assists 1 steal.
9. Seton Hall 47 at Florida 67
Seton Hall (Sim) was 5-1 and looking for their first winning season in 5 years. Florida (highcountry) was .500 with young talent everywhere. Seton Hall's star Glasper was looking unstoppable entering the game while Florida star Sanford was coming off his worst game (only 2 points) of the season. From the outset Florida threw a double team at Glasper and the Pirates and their star had no answer. However the Pirates solid defense would help them to an 8-6 lead with 12:30 left in the half. The Gators appeared to be sleep walking through the game on offense. Gator's PF Dudley took a hard foul from the Pirate's Ealy on another soft floater in the lane area. In between free throws highcountry yelled at his players to "Play tough" and "Take it basket like you mean it!". The Gators would respond and began attacking the basket with purpose. Seton Hall buckled under the onslaught and Florida went on a 25-7 run to end the half and lead 31-15. The second half was all about finishing what you started for the Gators and no matter what they tried the Pirates couldn't close the gap. Player of the Game Florida SG Tyler Sanford 15 points 2 rebounds 4 assists 2 steals.
10. South Carolina 81 at Syracuse 94
South Carolina (long_ge) rolled into the game 5-1 and looking to give another win to the Big East in this challenge. Syracuse (Sim) was only 3-3 but hopeful after 3 straight losing seasons. On paper the balanced Gamecocks are favored but Syracuse has a star in PG Furst and as any coach will tell you "If you have a star, you have a chance". The Gamecocks came out aggressively attacking the Syracuse press. 'Cuse fans on the other hand seemed more interested in their phone apps at the start of the game as South Carolina started off with a 4-0 lead in the first minute of the game. Then Furst nailed a three in the face of the defense and began jawing at his own fans as he went back up the court! This seemed to ignite the fans and both offenses as an exciting pitched scoring battle erupted on the court. With 2:30 left in the half South Carolina held a 41-38 lead. That's when a third foul on PG Jeffery Adams took the wind out of the Gamecock offense late in the half. Syracuse would take advantage with a 13-5 run to pull ahead 51-46 at the half. Orange's Furst appeared unstoppable with 13 points 2 assists 3 steals at the half. South Carolina would slow him in the second half but the inspired Orange would never give the lead back en route to a huge victory. Player of the Game Syracuse PG Roy Furst 21 points 4 rebounds 5 assists 4 steals.

I have submitted my requests for Oklahoma St. and Alabama. At least I know I will have at least 2 losses already next season.
5/14/2017 11:52 AM
I submitted a request to host LSU for week 8. St. Johns doesn't seem to be available for week 5.
5/16/2017 1:14 PM
1. If coaches mutually agree not to play, just let me know and I will put "Game not played: Joint Decision".
2. If you want out forever let me know. Your team will not be included as long as you coach it.
3. If you are ducking your matchup and the other coach wants to play- you get the new tag line next to your name in this Smith forum posting. _____ feared ____ and ran away. Game cancelled due to fear factor.
4. If you want out as a conference, no problem. Just let us know on here.
5. Avoid both in a given season and you are banished. stockplayer (Pittsburgh) is now banished from the battles.
6. If you mutually agree to a different week let me know via site mail. There is no guarantee that if you want a different week the other coach will agree and you run the risk of getting the new tag next to your name. So please work it out early. I do not like using the tag if it can be avoided.

I may lose or win both games this season or in any coming year but I made a commitment to play for my conference mates so I am going to play win or lose. However going forward if any conference has less than 6 human coaches participating that conference could be put on suspension from the battles. We are three of the "Big 6" conferences after all. Considered the elite of the D1 world. Six of twelve teams should not be too hard.

Wish the best to everyone and have fun playing.

Big 12 versus Big East (Week 5) 3rd season

1. Oklahoma 63 at UConn 64 2OT (Week #10)
Oklahoma (toknowpepsi) has won two straight in the series and entered the game 7-2. UConn (chapelhillne) entered the game 8-1 and in the running for a #1 seed. The Storrs crowd were on their feet cheering from the start. Oklahoma started off dominating the first five minutes of the game and built an 8-0 lead. When Oklahoma's Tuma exited the game opening up the inside and chapelhillne sent in Wells with orders to take full advantage of the opening. Wells would score or assist on the first nine UConn points to close the gap to 13-9. The fired up Huskies kept it going and a crushing illegal screen by Donald Risinger that knocked Oklahoma's Robinson to the ground showed that even the smallest Huskies were here for a dog fight. toknowpepsi sent Tuma back in to restore order. He would help slow the Huskies roll but wasn't enough to turn the tide for the Sooners. With just under three minutes left in the half UConn's Davis hurt his ankle on a sharp cut to the basket. That couldn't even slow the roll of the Huskies to a 25-23 halftime lead and with the assistance of trainers Davis would return for the second half. At the start of the second half Tuma reestablished control of the inside and Oklahoma took back momentum and the lead 30-28. Again Tuma went to the bench for a break and UConn responded with three layups and free throw to take the lead 35-33. The pattern was set: When Tuma was out chapelhillne's Huskies attacked the interior of the Sooners defense. With 30 seconds left the Sooners still held a 44-42 lead. That's when UConn's Wells accidentally hit Tuma in the groin while trying to steal the ball. Tuma hit the floor in pain but convinced Coach toknowpepsi that he was well enough to finish the game. He would miss the following free throw and did not seem to be on his game as he failed to block out Davis and allow the tip in that tied the game with six seconds left. toknowpepsi called a pick and roll with Tuma and Yazzie. When Kelley switched Yazzie blew by him but missed the dunk sending the game into overtime at 44-44. Yazzie redeemed himself in the overtime by scoring all 6 of the Oklahoma points but UConn as a team would match. Kelley would block Tuma's late layup attempt and force a second overtime. Yazzie (23 points) and Tuma (19 points) kept attacking in the second OT but in the end UConn's balanced attack proved to be too much. Player of the Game UConn's SF Nicholas Jasmin 13 points 7 rebounds.
2. St. John's 69 at Baylor 66
St. John's (chaltain) and Baylor (ftbeaglesfan) enter the game 3-1 and looking to make a statement before a national audience. Baylor's fans were excited for the matchup. Baylor came out aggressively and pushed the tempo trying to force St. John's out of their game. St. John's J. McEver showed his senior leadership early and scored or assisted on the first six points of the game for the Storm as they led 6-1 three minutes in. The game was a defensive struggle for the next few minutes and in a sign of things to come Baylor star J. Browner air balled an open three, missed a shot from the left side, and missed two free throws then picked up an early second foul. Bear's N. Silver would rally the troops and gain the lead 17-15 after a dunk by Morrow with 8:45 left in the half. Baylor's house was rocking moments later when Bostrom went up for another dunk. It was not to be. McEver struck another blow for St. John's and flew in to reject it and swing the tide. The Storm would go on a 20-9 run to pull ahead 35-26. The last two minutes things settled back down and St. John's led 41-33 at the half. Baylor came out hot in the second half with a 13-4 run and led 46-45. Things would go back and forth from there and Baylor led 61-58 with 4:45 left in the game. This is the point in games where stars make the difference and St. John's duo of D. Christensen and D. Kirby came through in a big way. It started with Christensen rifling a pass to Motley for the short jumper then stealing the ball in the backcourt for a dunk. Kirby followed that up with a steal of his own and St. John's would go on to take a lead they wouldn't let go. Player of the Game St. John's SG Donald Christensen 14 points 4 rebounds 2 assists 3 steals.
3. #8 Texas 59 at #13 Providence 51
Providence (starrider19) and Texas (manonde01) are both undefeated and expected to be two of the top teams in the country. Texas star Scott Gable leads the Longhorns while the Fryers use a more balanced approach. Both teams tried to control the ball early. Providence worked their mid range game to perfection early on and led 6-2. Then the Fryers started to make mistakes and the Longhorns made a 15-4 run to take the lead. It was 19-14 when Coach starrider19 could be heard telling his players to "Stop giving me reasons why you can't and just do it!". Ira Sample took it to heart and fired a three with confidence out of the gates. Although it missed Sample would lead Providence back to a tie before settling for a 23-26 deficit at the Half. The second half opened with both defenses making every shot difficult and it became a battle of fadeaways, jump shots, and free throws. Providence would do better than Texas and lead 44-39 with 7 minutes left. That's when the Fryer's Nelson picked up his fourth foul and the game swung. manonde01 began sending his Longhorns right at the interior of the Fryers defense again and again. Texas went on a 14-1 run and pulled ahead 53-45. Matson and Speakman nailed shots from down town to close it to 53-51 with 30 seconds left in the game. Texas would hit their free throws down the stretch. Player of the Game Texas SF Scott Gable 18 points 3 rebounds 2 assists 1 block.
4. Louisville 59 at Iowa State 97
Louisville (jbob23) entered the game struggling at 1-3 and undermanned with only 7 scholarship players. Iowa State (Clone77) is coming off their first loss of the season and are 3-1. Louisville's backcourt duo of D. Saunders and J. Brothers may not be enough. Iowa State is balanced but jbob23 is worried about containing Iowa State's L. Johnson. He could be a matchup nightmare for the Cardinals. The Hilton was rocking early as the Cyclones burst out to a 7-0 lead. Hite and Smyth would bring the Cardinals back to close it to 5-7. That's when it began to rain Iowa State jump shots. Iowa State would lead 31-22 when Brother's picked up his second foul for Louisville and was sent to the bench. That opened the flood gates and the Cyclones would go on a 19-8 run to end the half leading 50-28. The second half was marked by an explosion of three point shots by Iowa State and the inside dominance of Johnson. Louisville had no answer for the onslaught. Player of the Game Iowa State's Lawrence Johnson 23 points 10 rebounds 1 assist 1 steal 2 blocks.
5. Oklahoma State at Rutgers cancelled
6. West Virginia 55 at Kansas State 79
West Virginia (SIM) is on a roll after winning two straight to even their mark at 2-2. Kansas State (drob321) is 3-1 and looking to get their talented young team into the National Tournament this season. Youth is plentiful and exciting on both sides. Bramlage was rocking as the K-State fans were looking to make the nation take notice. These teams are young but showed no signs of that on offense early as they started firing away from the start. West Virginia had a slight 7-5 lead at the 17:20 mark. Then Kansas State exploded on a 19-4 run that put the Mountaineers on their heals. West Virginia would never get closer than 10 the rest of the way. Player of the Game Kansas State SF Raymond Moll 20 points 11 rebounds 3 assists 1 steal.
7. Cincinnati 69 at Missouri 83
Missouri (mschulte24) has never beaten Cincinnati (Sim) in their history. The Bearcats return leading scorer M. Riddles for his Senior season. Youth abounds in this game as Riddles is the only Senior on either team. Both teams are looking to return to the winning side after losing their last game. The backcourt's are the keys to these teams and will decide the game. Missouri's dynamic duo J. Berry and J. Hoover and Cincinnati's M. Riddles are the players to watch. Cincinnati had hope early when they saw their Bearcats get an early 5-2 lead. Then the Tigers J. Berry exploded for 14 points in a four minute span that put Missouri ahead 18-11 with 12:10 left in the half. Cincinnati locked down on defense and held the high flying Tigers to just two baskets the rest of the half. At the half Cincinnati was back on top 33-30. The Missouri stars couldn't have been different in the half: Hoover was shut out while Berry had put up 17 points to single handedly keep Missouri in it. Cincinnati star Riddles was held to 2 points in the half. The second half the stars shined and would decide the game. Berry started with an old fashioned three point play to tie it up. Riddles would respond with 5 points and an assist in a two minute span to put Cincinnati back on top 40-35. The big men for Missouri would help them claw closer to 40-41. Then Berry helped Hoover get going with assists to Hoover's threes on the next two Missouri possessions and a 46-43 lead. Missouri's buzz saw was finally rolling and they never looked back. Player of the Game Missouri's Joseph Berry 29 points 2 rebounds 2 assists 1 steal.

Matchups will be put in Bold if scheduled. Matchups versus Sim teams are optional. Matchups against other human coaches are expected. Please let me know if you are having any difficulty getting another human coach to schedule your matchup with them for these challenges.

The Frank Erwin Center was electric with anticipation by the Longhorn fans. LSU and Texas both came out slowing the tempo and making every shot count. Texas jumped out to a 7-2 lead and appeared to have solved LSU's press early. LSU would fight back when Collins made a steal and layup to ignite the Tigers offense. The Tigers would close it to 9-12 before the Longhorns took off on a 12-4 run to pull away again at 24-13. The Tigers tried to claw back but could only get the deficit cut to seven at the half 26-33. Kansas State came out aggressive and looking to force a quicker tempo. Early on that seemed to work against the Wildcats as they seemed out of sync on offense. Tennessee on the other hand looked more physical and ready to play by dominating the boards at the start of the game and led 7-2. Kansas St.'s forward tandem of W. Johnson and Moll got things on track for the Wildcats and put up 9 points in the next two minutes to close the gap to one at 11-12. Coach cjok1051 began yelling at his Volunteers to "D up! In the second half Kansas State made an early run to close it to 40-41 and had possession. Then the mental fatigue of carrying the team got to W. Johnson and Moll and they hit the proverbial wall. Moll lost the ball out of bounds followed by Johnson getting the ball stolen. Both led to Tennessee baskets for a five point lead. First Sattler slipped through the zone for a layup to put Mississippi up 71-67. Then Berry nailed a three to close it to 70-71. Mississippi would make a free throw then Riddle broke through the press to nail a baseline shot with 7 seconds left. Then Riddle committed a foul on Cobbins with no time left. We got 'em!" and Branch responded with a pair of buckets that started a 35-5 run that put South Carolina ahead 41-15. They never let up and cruised to victory. Player of the Game South Carolina PG Clint Runyon 25 points 6 rebounds 6 assists 5 steals.
