Cleanup Pitchers: folded Topic

Update, May 5: The league has folded for now. Too bad, because it would have generated the chance to use some different players and have teams that play more like the real ones...not the all star teams we usually get. I'm tired of using Schoolboy Rowe's short Phillies season; I want to use one of his great Tiger seasons, to be the ace of the staff that he really was. Same with Red Ruffing, Don Newcombe, Wes Ferrell, and so many others too. Not sure why it didn't generate more interest, but there are a lot of other themes out there right now so that might be part of it. Sigh...maybe I'll try it again during the hot stove season..

WE DON'T NEED NO STINKIN' DH!
Pitchers carry some heavy lumber in this league. These guys can pitch…and hit! They bat in the cleanup spot.

Basics: 24 teams, $100 million cap. No: injuries, AAA, trades, waivers.

Draft: Each player will be drafting 4 starting pitchers from the list below, using a snake style draft.

Filling out the roster:
Starting Rotation: You must roster the pitchers you drafted in the precise teams and seasons shown.
Teammates: Each player can fill out the rest of the roster by choosing 5 teammates of the players selected in the draft- but they must be from the same team and season- no twisting teammates! No teammate may have more than 140 IP- they belong in your bullpen, not your rotation.
Wild card: The 25th man can be any player from the SIM with a salary of less than $4m.
Clones: The pitchers you draft are exclusive. No one can clone any of them. That means no Babe Ruth, Reb Russell, or Joe Wood in the outfield! And no Red Ruffing in your bullpen. No individual owner can clone teammates from different seasons, but if another owner happens to pick him, that's fine. In other words, there can be two versions of the same player in the league, just not on the same team.

League Rules:
Every game your starting pitcher must bat in the fourth spot. Failure to do this will result in a forfeit.
Your stadium must be the home ballpark of one the 4 pitchers selected in the draft.

Draft details:
Draft order will be random. The draft will take place in the theme leagues forum. A 30 minute window will be granted for each pick, so if you can't make your assigned time, send your proxies to me or another trusted owner. If you are next in line, you can make your pick early only if all other players have chosen theirs. You must roster the player and season from the list below- no switching seasons! If your player had more than one team in that season, you may choose either team, but if you choose a partial season, they must have at least 150 IP for that team.

I will get the ball rolling. I like this idea. Sign me up.

I recently had 1969 Blue Moon Odom in a progressive league I was in. He went on a tear and hit HR in three consecutive starts including a game where he hit two. He ended up with 10 in only 105 AB. His slugging percentage was .571.

How will draft order be determined?

Thanks fatboydad54. Great article. The draft order will be random.

I'm in. Different type of league is a good thing. Won't see the usual characters.

$100M is tough, though. I've scouted rosters of several guys already and building around them will be tricky. For instance 48 Lemon is almost 11M and his best teammate Boudreau another 12M. That's most of what you can spend from any team.

I'll give it a try though I admit I am disappointed that Madison Bumgarner and Tom Glavine aren't on the list
4/22/2017 6:04 PM
Welcome redcped. I think this will feel more like $110 m cap for most of us, because it will the pitching is going to be pretty cheap in the third and fourth rounds, and with only four teams to choose from it will be hard to field a superstar at every position.

Yeah, this is a cool idea. Please count me in

I edited the list a little bit since you signed up- I added Bumgarner, plus Ferguson Jenkins, Robin Roberts and 1 or 2 others. Sorry Glavine didn't make the cut.

C'mon gentlemen. In what other league would you have to seriously consider drafting Elam Van Gilder ahead of Bob Gibson?
