how do you get a player a 5th yr. is it random

A player who was Ineligible his Freshman year will get a 5th year of eligibility if his GPA stays above 2.7. Except in D3 where ineligible players can play as freshmen.

Theoretically can also get a fifth year via a medical hardship, but in 7+ years on the site I'm not sure I've heard a case of someone actually having a player injured to the extent/frequency necessary to receive one.
