Do free agents prefer higher per year salary, or higher total contract value?

For example, pitcher wants $8M over two years. Does he prefer $10M over two years or $12M over three?

I think players will always take the higher dollar amount regardless of contract length. But MikeT will know for sure.

As long his average annual salary demand stays intact, he will prefer the most dollars. In this case, 12 over 3, since it is still at least the 4 mil/year average.
