Why does my team suck so bad? Topic

My Tacoma team started out on fire the first 20 games of the season and was the best team in the league at that time. Now that team has run into several 6 and 7 game losing streaks! I can't buy a win with this team! What do I need to do to improve this team? Right now, this team is playing like dog s#$* and is flat out awful! This game can be stressful at times.

It's not a bad team. You're running in a lot of bad luck. You haven't made an abnormal number of errors, but you have given up a ton of unearned runs. That won't continue. You're playing .500 ball but your Pythagorean is .540; that will get better. You've also adjusted your pitching staff for the better.

Big thing-- your SS has an OPS < .400, and that might not change very much; he's literally got a low-A bat. You have to try to find some sort of better SS solution. But other than that just hang in there and expect improvement.

Agree with dedelman on your team having bad luck. But I wouldn't do anything about the SS. He is defensive enough to warrant that bat. Defensive up the middle, offence on the corners.

I disagree. .650 OPS? Sure, that's standard for a SS, maybe even above average. .600? Ehhh that's a bit of a stretch. .550?? Time to find somebody better....

.339!?!?!?!? I'm sorry, I realize Tacoma is a -4 ballpark but that's ridiculous. His defense ratings would have to be like 100-120-120-120 to balance out a .339 OPS. This player loses

World->Reports->PlayerSearch->[Position:SS]+[Level:ML] or [Level:AAA]+[Team:All]
Also, GM->Trades->TradeBlock
Also, World->Standings->LeagueStandings->SendTCtoAllTheTeamsWhoAreBad.

The <.400 OPS is an outlier. His OPS should be closer to .500-.500, and at that his bat plays fine for his glove (IMO).

What Brent said. Be patient. Your D is good. That plus your pitching should hold you over.

The glove is very good, but not great; 18 (+) plays per season or thereabouts, and he probably makes 5-10 errors per season less than average. That's (generously) 30 singles saved.

The bat is awful. The .220/.250/.250 career line is the best indicator we have, since there are almost no comparables facing major league pitching. Even if you pinch hit for him a lot, that's 110-500 with 20 walks and 15 doubles in a full season. Add 30 singles to that, and it's equivalent to... .280/.308/.310 with average defense.

Which, to be fair, isn't a total disaster; I actually thought that he would have less than a .500 OPS with those ratings, but I might be wrong about that. It's not good, and you'd still want to fix it (in my experience you can get that glove with a .600 OPS in just about every league without paying very much, especially if you're willing to platoon), but it's not the major catastrophe I painted it at first.

That's just the thing though, if you can get a guy like this for $500k you can save the extra 2-3 million for a bigger bat rather then getting on base 1 extra time out of 10. It's a bad example because the league is so young but I love signing these guys 4th or 5th round, get em to the majors and when their rookie contract expires, kick em to the curb.

Thanks for looking at my team and giving the Advice guys. I know my short stop doesn't have the bat, but he won the GG award at SS last season. Love his defense, hate his offense. I might look for a better offensive player to play SS and sub my main SS in the 8th inning for defense.

Everyone would love a GG SS with a .984 OPS. But you can't have everything.

You for sure need a new SS, his defense is amazing, but like other said he is Low-A, Rookie Bat at BEST, he won't hit above 190. Build elite defense and pitching because of your -4,-4,-4,-4,-4, I also have a team in Tacoma that I am building elite D and Pitching.

He has - literally - hit above .190 before. Each of his 2 seasons, for 900 AB.

His first season was luck tbh, Hes hitting 150 in 60 games so far, hes gonna flow between 180-210, 190 is probably too low.

You suggested he build elite defense but replace this SS who has "amazing" def ratings.

I would lean more toward hockey's advice of keeping this guy at SS utilizing the several years of contract control and find a bat for another position. Unless, of course, you can find similar def numbers and a better bat at SS. Either way, keep that guy until his contract demands exceed his performance because he can fill in defensively anywhere.

I'm a defense fetishist. I'd play that guy and could live with him unless he starts hitting about .140.
