That's a great pick. That was who I was going to select if they were still available at #24.

Welcome back!

Another attractive team that's still available is the 1973 Orioles. With a pitching staff anchored by Mike Cuellar, Jim Palmer and Dave McNally, you may be able to build the rotation with the lowest WHIP in the league. I probably won't select them with my second pick because I previously took a similar team (the '69 Orioles) to the postseason in Season Two: World Series Losers... and I like variety in the teams I manage.

We just need five more. Hopefully we can get those remaining spots filled quickly so the fireworks can begin around the Fourth of July!

Come on, guys! Five more slots to fill...

With Andy Messersmith, Don Sutton and Juan Marichal, the 1975 Dodgers are another potentially loaded pitching staff. (Because they're likely to be on the same side of the NL/AL split as my 1977 Red Sox, I won't be able to take them.) As further evidence that the '75 Dodgers would be a good pick in this format, I'll point out that the 1974 Dodgers also made it to the postseason in Season Two: World Series Losers.

I'll take a second losing team and go with the 1970 New York Mets.

I'll take a second team with the '75 Dodgers... provided they will be opposite league from '70 Cubs.

I'm confident you will be fine. The AL/NL cutoff will be mid-1973 or 1974 at the latest.

I'm going to add a second team. 1979 Reds. I tried like crazy to get a late 70s Texas Rangers team to fit, they had some great pitchers Gaylord, Fergie, Blyleven, Matlack, but couldn't get close enough to $110M to be competitive.

I looked long and hard at the 1977 Rangers, but I came to the same conclusion... a lot of wasted money on the bench.

We only need two more teams! So far there's not been a lot of love for 1974-1976. In my opinion, you could do some damage with the '74 Cardinals, '74 Reds, '74 Red Sox (heck of an offense), '74 Yankees, '76 Yankees, '76 Royals and even the '76 Mets. And each of the Oakland A's teams from those three years look like a potential contender. Lots of good choices remain from other years in the Seventies too. Hopefully we'll fill those last couple of spots soon.

I'll jump in with the '78 Yankees

Actually the 1978 Yankees aren't an eligible team because the 1979 Yankees have already been spoken for. This league has a prohibition against consecutive years being used for the same franchise in the same season. Sorry. I really hope you will look around and select a different franchise/selected season. There are still plenty of excellent options available (including the '77 Yankees).

Bummer. I'm out, for now. I'll look at other options, but if someone else wants in, that's ok.

We still need just two more teams and then we'll be ready for some fireworks. So jump on into a fun league with a great group of owners.

Need some help deciding on a team? Then let me throw out another suggestion: the 1979 Philadelphia Phillies. With an offense built around Mike Schmidt and Pete Rose, and a rotation anchored by southpaws Steve Carlton and Jim Kaat, you really could go either way (pitcher or hitter) with your Hero. Jim Bunning, Curt Schilling or Robin Roberts could be added to give your starting staff a 1-2-3 punch. Or if you feel like more offense is needed, Chuck Klein, Richie Ashburn or Jimmy Rollins could be the star you're looking for to fill a perceived void in the lineup.

Deep down inside you know you miss the days of Disco and the Bee Gees... of Farrah Fawcett and Charlie's Angels... of Watergate and Richard Nixon... of movies like Star Wars, Rocky, The Godfather, The Exorcist, Taxi Driver and Close Encounters of the Third Kind!

I'll try again. I don't think this team will pitch well enough to compete, but what the hey

'75 Reds
