Does anyone else here think the game could benefit from some sort of stat smoothing? With the way that the league average for shooting percentages has steadily risen over the past 50 years, even the best scorers of the 60s and 70s can't really compete. On a flip side, a guy today can be slightly below league average for efg and still be totally usable.

Shouldn't WIS try to do something to relate guys' stats to the average of their era? From what I understand, they already mess around with AST% and have to guess on rebound percentages. Why not one more change to open up the player pool a bit more?

Q. What is normalization and how does SimLeague Basketball incorporate it?
A.

In the context of SimLeague Basketball, normalization refers to adjusting player shooting percentages (2 point and 3 point) by comparing the player's percentage to the league average for that season.

In the SimEngine, the actual process is a bit more complicated. When a player takes a shot, we compare the shooter's percentage to the league average for his season. We also take the shooting percentage allowed (related to defensive rating) for each defender and compare that to the league average for that defender's season, with more weight placed on the defender guarding the shooter.

In effect, a player who shot poorly in a season where the league average was also low may shoot better when playing against players from seasons with higher shooting percentages, and vice versa. It is important to note that the player's actual shooting percentage, as opposed to his normalized shooting percentage, still accounts for more than half of the end result. This is reflected in the # numbers.

you see it already exists (allegedly) - it just doesn't work very well

WIS will never make another change to the NBA SIM, other than adding players. Been saying that for close to a decade.

It's similar to what they do in the MLB sim. It doesn't mean a 50s player with a sub 40 efg will b good in the sim.

I think they do a very poor job of normalizing anything. That's what the advanced statistics were for. With very, very few exceptions, only players from the last 30-40 years are usable in the sim for normal leagues.

I think WIS just thought this looked/sounded nice in print, thus they trotted this out. It seems like complete bunk though because I feel like players almost always shoot or play to their percentages.

It's really a shame that WIS no longer gives a **** about any of its games, mainly because FOX is and always has been more concerned with using these games to predict real-life results when it's not really what this site was made for. They've missed the shtick for 12 years now...they don't know/realize how unique their product is.
