Who would win in a 3pt contest? Topic

Well not actually a 3pt contest, but how would you rank these players' 3pt shooting ability? What would you set their 3pt. frequency on?

1: ATH 74. SPD 60. PE 74. BH 54.

2. ATH 46. SPD 78. PE 58. BH 72.

3. ATH 34. SPD 88. PE 65. BH 92.

I like #3 because of that speed and ball handling. Does that make him better than 1?

Thanks :)

I would have them all set to (-2), but I also tend to be more conservative with my 3-pt shooting.

Try your luck with all -2 and hope your crazy Ath guys can be able to draw fouls Verses a -5. If that doesn't work, but 1 and 3 at -1 and cross your fingers.

1. -1, 2. -2, 3. -1

1. -1, 2. -2, 3. -1
Agree. Just start there and tweak as they get some games in.

In a vacuum, maybe. But check out his team. I don't think the team has enough passing to justify having those guys take threes, especially at D2 where the defenders are going to be better than D3. I'll stick with everyone at (-2) because I hate giving up possessions.

Yeah that's a fair point. But if he doesn't take ANY 3s then teams will go heavy minus against him and just pack the paint. Even taking 8ish 3s a game will prevent the -5.

I shoot a lot of 3's and generally think people are too conservative with their settings.

I would probably have the 1st and 3rd guy at 0, maybe +1 if I thought I could exploit a setting, defender or set. The middle guy is probably a -1 for me.

That's in a vacuum though, there are a lot of other factors that go into my settings.

I would also start at 0, -1, 0 and adjust from there.

I like #3 best and I would start with trenton's settings. Then I would adjust with experience. Now, I dont mean one game. but after several games - after nonconference perhaps, I would adjust. If a guy is hitting 25% his threes that gets his setting lowered. If he is hitting 40% probably gets it raised - although I would look at whether he happened to have favorable matchups

I know that process isnt what you asked, but i think three point shooting is complex - way more than a guys key ratings. Its team interaction and other ratings too. I think some of how it works is un knowable - at least to dimwits like me. but, one can start with reasonable settings and then adjust.

Thinking a little bit more about this, i wanted to give my opinion.

As a general rule, I think 3 point shooting is something like 45% PER, 25% Speed, 20% BH, 10% ATH. There are other factors (team pass, offensive type, defensive players, defensive set, and defensive setting) but these are the individual players baseline.

Using those calculations, #3 is the best than #1.

With that being said, i think guys like #1 do better against poor defenders. I don't know why it doesn't make much sense and my observations aren't exactly well documented.

I use the above formula as a baseline but I think I undervalue PER a little in it.

Like TJ, my teams tend to shoot a lot of 3's. I tend to eyeball it more than use a formula like he does, but I am also willing to sacrifice in other areas to get PER above 80 and 90. I don't think any of those guys are great 3 point options, but I would think #3 is the best. If for no other reason than he won't help you with that low ATH near the basket. I would set #3 at 0, #1 at -1, and #2 at -2 and then adjust as necessary after a few games

To me:
1. use as 3-pt shooter, set at 0.
2. use as slasher, set at minus-2.
3. use as PG slasher, set at minus-2... with his a88-bh92, will be very effective... hopefully his FT-rating is good too... but that 88 and 92 looks great.

Definitely not #2. If #1 plays at the SF position (where the SPD is less of a disadvantage), he could be a strong 3 point shooter.

I would set
#1 - at 0
#2 - at - 2
#3 at - 1
