bronxcheer, your coach in the team photo looks a lot like a young Mike Piazza.
He was a hardass, former Orioles farmhand and marine. I played short and pitched, he covered my swollen elbow(floating bone chips) with Heet and Atomic Jelly.

I'm the little guy , front row with the cheap red cleats. I was a year or two younger than most of the guys.

Welcome Cubrunner... it's an honor to have you in the league! I had to turn in a ticket to have the season range changed to begin at 1940. Will send you the league# when that happens.

Super cool Cubrunner... did they have "little league" back then as the internationally recognized organization it is today? You're of the age when you could have seen some of the real greats we use on this site. Hopefully you were able to get out to the old ball park when you were a kid, although I realize a lot of people lived quite far from MLB cities at a time when travel wasn't as convenient (no highway system, rail travel, and a fledgling commercial airline industry that was really only for the "wealthy").

you must have been a pretty good player, playing two years over your age level at the "premier" positions. Did the mistreatment of the elbow injury curtail your MLB dreams?

lol, no shot there, but I did give up pitching, transitioned to second base for my high school and college career

We didn't have little league, but i was lucky enough to see some of greats play. Mays, Musial, the 1955 Dodgers at Ebbets Field and I saw Rodgers Hornsby when he had a baseball clinic in Illinois. He had the best pitchers in the area throw him their best stuff and he knocked them all over the place Some one asked him why he wasn't still playing. He said he could still hit major league pitching but he couldn't run to first base. This was the late forties so he had to be gettingpretty old for baseball.Lot of good memories'
