Hey now. PORK is a fun and interesting 20 team league. An owner is stepping away from WIS, and their competitive team "Missouri Cardiroyals" needs a new owner. The Cardiroyals finished 91-71, one game back in the NL West. The previous season they won their division. So it is a competitive team.
PORK is the "Progressive Optional Rookie Keeper" league, entering its 7th season. We are a mix of veteran and novice owners. As the name states, you have the option whether or not to keep your teams' rookies. Every owner back in the first season drafted a team from 1963 and one from 1993, and each new season has had the option whether or not to keep their rookies. Rookie is defined by first team player played for that season based on baseball-reference.com. Rookie season is first year with WIS stats.
So as owner of the 1969 Cardinals and 1999 Royals, you get all the great St. Louis players from the 60's like Gibson, McCarver, Cuellar and Carlton, plus K.C.'s Joyner, McRae and Damon. Not to mention David Cone. How come they have Cuellar and Carlton? Because as rookies they were Cards.
Coming rookies for the 69 Cards in the next few seasons: Keith Hernandez, Jose Cruz, Ted Simmons, and Bob Forsch. Coming rookie for the 99 Royals in the next few seasons: David Dejesus, Zach Grienke to name a few.
There is also a free agent draft each season (worst to first with bottom four teams in a first round draft lottery) from all the rookie players who aren't kept, plus all players from the teams not involved (1969 free agency teams Expos, Padres, Royals, Pilots and 1999 free agency teams Angels, Arizona, Reds, Rockies, Tigers, Marlins, Brewers, Pirates, Cardinals, Rays). We are a 20 team league, so not every franchise is covered. Free Agency draft has helped maintain parity as great players Larkin, Helton, Salmon etc. have all been drafted.
editors note - we had a vote and expansion was declined, but if there is will vote could be revisited. Please no nasty sitemails from those who opposed it!
DH in AL only (your team is in the NL). Trades are encouraged, and each division champ advances in the playoffs.
Other catch is you must keep 25 players going into each season, but the 25 players can include rookies from that year. This is done to help keep teams "true" to their original franchises and not dropping everyone. So draft is max 5 rounds -- each team is encouraged to end up with 25 MLB players and 5 player AAA squad. This way also, you can stash an underachieving player in the minors until they blossom in a few seasons!
I am currently putting together to 1969/1999 draft. Your team would draft #15.
