Sure, but I had in mind team performance. In other words, my latest working theory about team success is that it takes several key players overperforming expectations. Your Ruth did fine, but I could argue that your Fielder and Beltran (and I'm sure others) underperformed, and that drove your team's lack of success. I don't mean to pick on kstober, but since he just won the World Series on a wild pitch, I'm sure he won't mind. His "ace" pitcher, 1965 John Buzhardt, finished 17-11. I know if I put him on my roster his OAV would be .350 and he would go 5-20 or something. Now kstober may be a better manager than me, and there may be other circumstances, but my point is that luck--or performance in a given season--is a key driver of team success.
