Why do you think the award isn't named "Most Bestest Player"?
Because the people naming the award never imagined someone as stupid as you thinking that they meant to give the award to the player with the best teammates.

Do you think they imagined somebody as narrow minded as you deciding that "valuable" had one and only one possible interpretation?

John Smoltz just called Brett Gardner "valuable". Did he use the word correctly? Should the Perfessor explain the Latin root of the word to Smoltz?

The "valuable" Brett Gardner just had a big hit for the Yankees. Was that hit valuable in that particular situation?

What was the run probability of a single in that situation?

Is Gardner's fouling off eight gazillion pitches before getting the hit reflected in his WAR?

This is exactly it. BL says the BBWAA meant to name it Most Outstanding Player, and yet it’s not called that. What’s more likely: that the BBWAA was confused about what they wanted and didn’t know how to use the English language, or that BL and dahs don’t know what the hell theyre talking about?

Ill go with the latter.

To be fair, dahs wasn't around back then to lecture them about the proper use of nouns and verbs, or Latin roots, when they named the award.

The BBWAA did know how to use the English language. The fact that you and tec and Mike don't doesn't make their utilization of the language incorrect.

The word "outstanding," aside from the sense of "current," e.g. an outstanding debt, was extremely uncommon in the early 20th century. Why would they use a word that nobody understood instead of a word that everyone understood? The problem is that the utilization of language changes in 100 years. We're basically arguing about whether the original meaning or the original wording is more relevant to modern voting.

I think the most likely scenario is that they intended the award be given to the best player in the league and called it MVP because it sounds better than MOP.

The most likely scenario is that you’re retarded

“The very first lines of the letter sent to M.V.P. voters say this: ‘There is no clear-cut definition of what most valuable means. It is up to the individual voter to decide who was the most valuable player in each league to his team’.”

No clear-cut definition? Did they consult dahs on this?

And oh look... “most valuable player in each league TO HIS TEAM.”

I think it should be the League’s Most Valuable Player, not Most Valuable Player to his team. But there’s no clear cut definition and there shouldn’t be.
