3-2 Zone, SF, D1 Topic

At D1 who would you rather have at the SF for defensive purposes only.

100 ATH 50 SPD 100 DEF
80 ATH 80 SPD 80 DEF

Depends on the SPD of your PG and SG...but the simple answer is #2. #1 is a 2-3 SF.

This is an interesting answer...

I don't have experience with zone - but why would the Spd of your guards impact how your bigs perform? Are they linked somehow?

PG/SG
SF/PF
C

You'd prefer the higher D from the SF in this set-up.

My fault! This is for SF. Thought it was PF. Makes sense now.

I used to think that way but now I am not so sure. If my guards average something like 60 ATH 90 SPD 80 DEF

With the split guy the wing defense becomes 73 ATH 76 SPD 87 DEF
With the all 80 guy the wing defense becomes 67 ATH 86 SPD 80 DEF

I don't think the bottom trio is better than top trio in the 3-2.

I don't think you can make that decision without knowing what the ATH/SPD/DEF of your PG/SG is.

1st guy, if it's pure zone. I would typically prefer the second guy, but I run press/zone, where speed matters a bit more. In a pure zone, his slight speed deficiency hurts less than his excellent defense helps.

For reasons similar to what you pointed out.

Example:
PG 50 ATH, 98 SPD, 75 DEF
SG 75 ATH, 96 SPD, 55 DEF
That team would probably want the 100-50-100 guy, because they need the ATH/DEF bump

PG 75 ATH, 85 SPD, 85 DEF
SG 77 ATH, 75 SPD, 87 DEF
That team would probably want the 80-80-80 guy, to keep their average speed up.

It does not depend at all : 100-50-100 all the time

Do you play zone?

Yeah. And I had a D3 and a D2 zone teams for a long period : 250 to. 240 enough said, and the unknown 100 that sometimes seem to make a player special whether he is a scoring machine, a behind eveything passer or a shut-down defender. I think playing his 80-80-80 over the other is a mistake.

Good then you know how it works. The first thing is deciding if your C can stand alone. Then you have to decide if you're better off in 3-2 or 2-3. So you know the ratings of the guards/PF should matter when deciding 2-3/3-2. If you're going 2-3 and the PF is OK athletically, slower than a rock but a 100 defender, do you not think a faster SF would be a better match?

That may be one way to figure out zone defense but it isn't the only and I don't think it's the best.
