Hidden ratings affect FTs? Topic

Just curious if any other rating plays a "hidden" factor into free throws? For the past two seasons I feel my UNLV team has under performed in that area despite having good free throw ratings. There is nothing more frustrating then sucking at the line...

I'd guess small sample size.

I doubt it. If there was some kind of hidden experience or clutch rating, maybe, but I don’t think that exists in the game.

When im scouting, I generally think of .667 as C, with every grade increment corresponding to about .033 of a point. So C+ at .700, B- at .733, B at .767, etc. Just a rough guide, because there are gradients within each grade we don’t see (red B+ is a little better than orange B+ for a given player). And obviously, there will be variance based on sample size.

I've felt this way since I first started playing. I had a SUPER weird FT experience right off the bat.

C FT Rating

FR: 37/48 = 77.1%
SO: 41/66 = 62.1%
JR: 57/89 = 64.0%
SR: 33/67 = 49.3%

I was baffled by this drop off his SR season. And while the sample size wasn't huge, it wasn't tiny either.
Also, he started his SO and JR seasons averaging 21mpg and 23mpg but then as a SR he came off the bench and avg 17mpg so it didn't seem like a ST issue.

Interesting,I guess I just assumed a little higher for the letter grades....guess Ill have to start tracking it to see

Wow, thats a huge drop off...

I thought home court advantage factored into FT's. I could be wrong,
10/11/2017 6:35 PM
The player's fatigue level at the time the FT's are taken plays a role if I recall correctly. So a B FT shooter over time should shoot a better percentage at Fairly Fresh than that same player would shoot over the long term if Tired.

This. And as TJ mentioned I would think homecourt plays a role and if that's true you'd see bigger home/away variance at D1 than D2 and D3.

A few years ago I recall a similar thread about FTs where a user showed over a couple different seasons the best defensive teams seemed to give up the lowest FT%. I think CS looked into it and swore there wasn't a correlation but whichever user posted data made a pretty compelling argument.

Interesting that his big outlier seasons were the two he was coming off the bench.

I didnt think about HCA, that’s totally possible. I’d love to see some data, if anyone is less lazy than me and wants to look into it.

I was just going to say you only can see the stamina bar every 4 minutes, so it's not out of the question, especially if both teams are running uptempo that the same player that was green could be yellow on the stamina bar 2 minutes later and you would have no idea.

Close but FT % to Grades are as follows:

Below 54 = F
54 to 57 = D-
57 to 60 = D
60 to 63 = D+
63 to 66 = C-
66 to 69 = C
69 to 72 = C+
72 to 75 = B-
75 to 78 = B
78 to 81 = B+
81 to 84 = A-
84 to 87 = A
Above 87 = A+

This was observed from hundreds of recruits based on the listed FT% and their assigned FT grades.

For this past season in Crum (D1 only):

Home Teams: 63,060 - 88,413 (71.32%)

Overall: 124,973 - 175,137 (71.36%)

Vanderbilt shot 17.16% higher on the road 78.48% vs 61.33% at home.
Boise State shot 11.99% higher at home 79.44% vs 67.45% on the road.

The player's fatigue level at the time the FT's are taken plays a role if I recall correctly. So a B FT shooter over time should shoot a better percentage at Fairly Fresh than that same player would shoot over the long term if Tired.
I was about to also point this out.

Yeah this makes sense to me. And I haven't really tracked it very much. But the example I posted above makes even less sense if that's the case since he was playing fewer minutes and was coming off the bench. He should have been pretty fresh.

Maybe you could look at FT rating and ST and see if there is some correlation. Or FT % on teams that run FB/Press vs Zone.
