Why? Because human nature. People group by ideology and quickly realize that small groups get wiped out by big groups. So small groups join larger groups that tend to have some ideological overlap.
There’s nothing the Republican or Democrat parties could do to end that even if they wanted to.

I don’t want to get buried in a semantics argument. There are multiple political parties in every federal election and there are independents in Congress.
Regardless of how you want to label it, two parties dominate. That’s true in Canada, England, Germany, etc.. The reason is what I said in my first response.
