Why are you thinking anyone is talking about Judge changing his approach altogether? The original complaint was that 208 Ks is too many and he should work on cutting that down somehow.
Yeah...that "somehow" you mention...that's an approach change.
so, if Judge were to try to cut down on his strikeouts it would be a change in his approach, but when Trout says he's going to try to cut down on his strikeouts its not a change inn his approach? How do you know the difference?

so, Judge should try to improve as a player, but he shouldn't change his approach at all. How are you suggest he improve as a player? The best players are always adjusting and changing their approach as the rest of the league adjust and changes its approach towards that player.

I'm pretty sure players rarely try to make outs (sacrifice bunts are about the only situation I can think of) so how can they try to make less outs when they don't try to make any outs in the first place?
Wait, are you now arguing that hitters can't implement changes to their approach to try to get better results?
not sure how you got that out of what I posted, but I'm not sure how you get a lot of the things you post.
You’re asking if it’s possible for hitters to change their approach to make less outs.

I’m not saying he shouldn’t try to improve. I’m saying he shouldn’t shorten his swing to cut down on Ks.

But wouldn't it be awesome if, like Trout, he cut down on his strikeouts while improving his OPS?
Obviously, improving his OPS would be awesome. What he does regarding Ks doesn’t really matter.
Mike Trout said he was going to work on cutting down his strikeouts. He did and, magically, his OPS went up.

Do you think that might happen if Judge cut down on his whiffs?
You’re assuming causation. He reduced his k’s from 23% to 20% in 2015-2016 and his OPS stayed the same.
Maybe he thought he'd follow your advice and change those 3% of strikeouts into intentional ground outs to the second baseman.

Then realized how stupid it was to do that.

Shhh. I like where wylie's headed here.

No, you misunderstood BL.

He said that Judge's OBP and SLG were good enough, and there was no need for him to try to improve.
11/6/2017 11:29 PM
he also said, and I quote "Two different things. Judge should work to improve. But I don’t think shortening up his swing in an attempt to avoid strikeouts will help him improve. I think it will make him worse. " That does seem to contradict his statement that Judge does not need to improve on last season.

Alcides Escobar makes a **** load of outs. He should change his approach to be more selective at the plate and drive the ball in the air more.

That would likely result in more K’s but also more walks and a higher HR rate and BABIP.

Bryce Harper tried to cut down on his strikeouts after his MVP season and it tanked his performance. One example doesn't make a trend.
He played through injuries that most players would have gone on the DL for. That's why his performance tank. As has been said before, if you're going to be a fan, watch the game instead of just reading stats. They don't tell the whole story.

I'm assuming the season after he said "I want to cut down on strikeouts" but, truthfully, I don't know. I just assumed tec knew what he was talking about. I didn't look it up.
So you don't know if he cut his K's and improved his OPS?
Are you saying tec was incorrect?

Do you think I can't look it up?
Well...you don't even know what years to compare...so I guess you could try.

FWIW, Trout never significantly cut down on his strikeouts. He's always floated around low to mid 20%. 22, 22, 19, 26, 23, 20, and then 18 this year. Even when he went from 26% to 23%, it was only a difference of 26 Ks over the course of 700+ PAs.
Looks to me he dropped from 26% of his AB to 18% of his AB. You don't think that's noticeable?
The year over year numbers aren't that different, at least not different enough to argue that a normal variance in K rate deserves credit for a slight increase in production.

2012 - 22% K - .963 OPS
2013 - 19% K - .989 OPS
2014 - 26% K - .938 OPS
2015 - 23% K - .992 OPS
2016 - 20% K - .991 OPS
2017 - 18% K - 1.071 OPS

His career average K rate is 21.5. His average OPS is .976. The biggest difference between his best year and his worst year is his home run rate.
I just want to quote this again because "If he changed his approach, it didn't show in the results" is so ignorantly funny.

There are many idiots in the world, but I don't recall any that go to the lengths BL does to justify his idiocy. He makes Donald Trump look like Einstein.

Unless you think a couple % of K rate and a slight variance in OPS is an approach change, I don't see how that's wrong.

Or are you suggesting that his approach change took three full years to implement?

As I've said a zillion times. He has no self awareness. He has no clue how he comes across to others.
