I'm opening the Hall of Really Good in Oneonta.
Its pretty close to Cooperstown, but its not quite Cooperstown so it needs its own title.
So somehow in your mind fame = greatness?
Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian are famous. So very good comes in somewhere below them?
I didn't name the building. What criteria do you base putting people in the Hall of Fame on?
Personally, I'd put guys in based primarily performance, though I can see room for fame to matter in certain cases (Ichiro seems like a good example of this - seems to have contributed significantly to the increase in Japanese players moving to MLB, increased merchandise sales in Japan, etc. and was also a nationally popular player for many years in the US).
But the point is that the name in no way implies that "very good" isn't good enough, and people love to pretend that it does. The name of the building doesn't inherently imply some kind of elite greatness requirement to get in. It doesn't even imply goodness. I don't know who the first person to make a "Hall of Very Good" comment was, but it's a shame, because it's such a popular comment to make now and it doesn't even make sense. If it were called the Hall of Great you'd have an argument.
