So if I have a player who is contracted for another 3-4 years, I put him on the WW, I know I am paying his salary this season. But am I correct in thinking that if someone picks him up, they pay the rest of his contract after this season?

If they claim him, you aren't responsible for his remaining salary this season.

Claimed means you don't pay anything left on his deal. Which includes this year as well as future years.
