It's not called The Hall of Stats.
But that’s what it’s based on. The only players where fame came before stats were Catfish Hunter, and Bill Mazeroski. Both meh players.
Is it?

Then why is Ortiz gonna walk in his first year of eligibility and Martinez will walk in only if a ticket accompanies him? 'splain that.
Because voters are dumb.
LOL. No. It's because it's not called The Hall of Stats. No matter how much you and your ilk wish it was, it isn't. Much like this board, you're not God of Baseball. Accept that simple fact and you'll live a happier life.
No, I think I like my answer better.

The boters are dumb. They elected Catfish Hunter when he’s basically average and left out guys like Trammell and Edgar Martinez and Mike Mussina.

The "boters" can spell better, I'd bet.

Calm down. You don't have to type so fast. We'll all be here a few minutes.

And, of course, you like your wrong answer better. But it's never going to be called The Hall of Stats. You may wish it so but it won't happen.

If voters could spell better, Kirby Puckett would just be a dead guy.

Cuz even post-Moneyball, all these old voters don’t understand which stats are good. They’ll prob vote another RBI hound in over Edgar like Harold Baines or something stupid
Or, more likely, it's not called The Hall of Stats.
I thought you were a small Hall type guy anyways? Time to vote in David Freese, Don Larsen, Gene Tenace, Billy Hatcher, and Hideki Matsui because of their fame.

Doesn't matter what I am. It's what the HOF is. It is not The Hall of Stats. You can't say "His stats are better" when comparing a guy who can't get in to a guy who will get in. Why? Because it's not The Hall of Stats. I explained why Ortiz will get in and Martinez will not earlier. Go back and read it. Then you'll understand.

Well there you go. “It’s what the HOF is.” That’s just how it is.

Why are kickoffs still in football when they’re by far the most dangerous play, require no skill, and are unlike any other aspect of football? That’s just how it is.

Why does no one revamp or tear down the Chambers St train station only to let it rot in public view? That’s just how it is.

Why isn’t Edgar, Tram, Bonds, Clemens, or Hoffman in the HoF when they were vastly superior to their peers and unequivocally deserve to be in? That’s just how it is.

Change the world if you can. Live in the world if you can't.

Which one of those will you start with?

Based on what? Edgar beats Ortiz in BA, OBP, OPS, OPS+, K rate, BB rate.

Ortiz was great. But it's foolish to blindly state he was better than Edgar. I'd say they're close to even. They were just different types of hitters.
He is better in terms of World Series rings.

In the post season Edgar hit .266 and SLG .508, Papi hit .289 with SLG of .543 and without him the Sox don't win in 2004 or 2013 when he hit .688 and the rest of the team his .167

Also, naked eye test: Papi was better. Just ask the Yankees fans who they feared more.
Rings probably do influence voters, though they shouldn't. By that logic, Tim Lincecum has been better throughout his career than Clayton Kershaw.

One of my faves from 2012... #zitohasrings

Did you miss the postseason stats aspect of my post? Without him they don't have the rings. I didn't realize Lincecum and Kershaw were HoF candidates.
You're using rings to compare two players' value. It's retarded.

.266/.508 is really not that far off from .289/.543. Papi also had way better teams.
Avg is 9% better and SLG is 7% better. Would you be OK taking an 8% pay cut?

Way better teams? What was so great about his 2013 team that hit .167 in the WS? Who was the 2nd best hitter on that team? Didn't Edgar play with AROD, Griffey and Buhner?
Over 100 AB, the difference between .266 and .289 is 2 hits. But yes, that's a HUGE difference.

As for 2013...the Sox won the WS in 6 games, with two wins by 5+ runs. Their pitchers allowed 1, 4, 4, 2, 1 and 1 runs. So if you're contention is that Papi is the only reason they won that series, you're really reaching.
Difference between a .300 hitter and a .270 hitter is 3 hits so is a .270 hitter the same as a .300 hitter LOL?

You are dumb. Without Ortiz the Sox lose all those games yes 1-0, 4-0, 4-0, 2-0.

11/21/2017 4:00 PM
doesn't the difference between a .300 hitter and a .270 hitter depend on how many at-bats said hitter had?

We assumed 100 from an earlier post of his.
11/21/2017 8:16 PM
I picked that as an approximation because post-season ABs are limited.

Over the course of 100 ABs, it's a little difficult to tell how big the gap between them really is. A difference of 2 hits may be significant to you because you're all over the Papi train, but it's not a big difference.

I do appreciate that you went full BL in your post though, claiming that Papi was responsible for every run they scored in that WS. That makes it much easier to write you off as an idiot now.

so the members of the Baseball Writers of America who, you know, write about baseball for a living don't understand which stats are good, but you do? I admit some of the writers are clueless but a good percentage of them have forgotten more about baseball than you'll ever know.

Look at the 2013 WS and maybe NOT every run but 90% would you agree with that?
