What about Chipper? Topic

Now that he's on the ballot, please discus if Chipper Jones is a HOF player. I mean, he was certainly no Scott Rolen, but does he deserve getting in?

Not being Scott Rolen is a plus, because Chipper was an overall better player than Rolen.

He's also better than Edgar Martinez.

Chipper is in.

Chipper was definitely better than EM.

And they both should be in.

Slam dunk

I hate to be the wet blanket here, but he did take a lot of walks. I prefer my big hitters not pass the baton to lesser hitters.

Walks aside, Chipper generated more offense than Edgar. And played defense.

Chipper in, Edgar out.

Chipper 303/401/529 and 558 runs of offense per fangraphs (the hitting and baserunning part of their WAR calculation...but no defense)
Edgar 312/418/515 and 500 runs of offense per fangraphs

Edgar's line is a little better but Chipper had almost 2000 more PAs, so that explains the higher Oruns total.

And, yeah, the fact that Chipper played gold glove defense is why he has such a big WAR lead over guys like Derek Jeter and Edgar Martinez.

I expect Chipper Jones to get an extremely high percentage, like 97-98% range.
11/20/2017 6:34 PM
Jones/Jeter in with 97%+, Edgar gets in with a ticket just like me.

When his time comes, Mariano Rivera will probably set the new record for percentage.

Some ******** will probably leave him off their ballot, though, so it won't be 100%.

Rivera will get in, but I don't see him setting a record for percentage. he's a closer, and some voters seem to think closers don't belong.

The percentage doesn’t matter as long as it’s over 75. There isn’t a special wing in the HOF for first ballot or high percentage guys.

I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that first sentence is hyperbole. Aside from the obvious fact that some idiots don't vote for first timers or relievers - what makes you think Rivera would get a higher percentage than anyone already in the Hall?

As for Jeter - I don't think he's as universally loved as Yankee fans want to believe. He's a no doubt first ballot HOF, but I'll say around 94-95%.

Because Rivera was clearly the very best player at his particular position (closer) in all of ML history. By a ridiculously wide margin. And his post-season success is unparalleled.

I mean...he's definitely the greatest relief pitcher of all time, but, you know, he's a relief pitcher...skinniest kid at fat camp.
