That being said, he belongs in the Hall of Fame, it's just not some sort of injustice if he "only" gets 90 or 95% of the vote.

I mean...he's definitely the greatest relief pitcher of all time, but, you know, he's a relief pitcher...skinniest kid at fat camp.
He also wore a baseball glove when he played, unlike . . . well, you know.

When his time comes, Mariano Rivera will probably set the new record for percentage.

Some ******** will probably leave him off their ballot, though, so it won't be 100%.
People just need to realize that it’s a position in the sport, and shouldn’t dock him for it.

He also was a bust when he tried to actually pitch in every inning.

Rivera has some of the highest profile blown saves in baseball history.

Who doesn't love that? 100%

It’s not actually a different position than a starting pitcher. It’s less valuable and lesser pitchers tend to be relievers.

It would be like claiming that Lenny Harris belongs in the hall because he was a great pinch hitter.

That being said, Rivera belongs, but let’s not go nuts.

That being said, I fully expect Chipper and Thome to be 1st ballot HoFers. I’d like to see Hoffman, Gar, and Larry Walker get in too.

BL, I like you but, do you not get what I’m referring to?

I do. I think Rivera and Edgar Martinez should both be docked for their inability to, in Rivera’s case, start and, in Martinez’s case, to play the field. It takes away from the value that they were able to create in their careers.

Rivera is worthy of the HOF and will, in fact, be elected. Most likely on the first ballot.

Martinez is not worthy, and barring last ballot sympathy votes next year, will drop off the ballot.

Exactly, their cases should be similar, but isn’t because of the team they played for (New York vs Seattle). Greatest closer of all time and Greatest DH of all time. Sure, Mariano would’ve been more valuable as a starter, and Edgar would’ve been more valuable if he played first base

I don’t like WAR, but if it’s gonna be a mainstream stat, I guess I’ll have to get use to it. WAR already docks Gar for not playing defense, yet he still finished with the almost exact same WAR as Pudge Rodriguez. One of the best defensive catchers of all time, probably the best arm of all time, and he was no slouch at the plate, but Gar hit so well, that he finished ahead of him in WAR

Yeah, it’s a case of narrative overriding performance. In reality, EM added more runs on offense than Rivera prevented on the mound. But Rivera pitched in New York and people tend to think there’s something special about closing. It’s a perfect storm of overrated.

Yes. Overrated. NY fans found a way to make the best relief pitcher of all time overrated.

Chill with the best relief pitcher of all time. Kimbrel probably already passed him. If he hasn’t yet, it will be soon

Edgar is not the "greatest DH of all time".
