Here's one change I'd like to consider
- No bonus points for winning in the divisional round
- 10 bonus points for winning the WS
- And keep 5 bonus points for winning LCS, and (perhaps) for making the playoffs.
Note this would relatively hurt me, since I tend to do well at round 1 of playoffs, and less well as it goes on. But here's the reason for it.
Right now, Game 5 of a divisional series matters much more than Game 7 of a World Series. If you win a WS G7, you get 6 more points. That's nice. But if you win a division series Game 5, you get 6 more points *and the right to play for 18 more points*. That right is really valuable - on average it's worth around 8 points. So division series game 5's make a way bigger difference to who wins the title that World Series Game 7's.
And that seems a little off. I can remember some excellent Game 5's in real life baseball, but unless you're a fan of one of the teams involved, they often fade into insignificance. But I can remember every World Series G7 from recent years. It's odd that WISC makes game 5's so much more significant.
This would also help the issue about randomness. Under this model, for the playoffs to make a huge difference, someone would have to win a bunch of World Series. And I think if someone pulls off that feat, they should get lots of bonus points. But being like the 90s Atlanta teams and winning the LDS every year then doing relatively badly in the LCS and WS seems like not something we should reward so much. (Even if I've had a pretty good run with just that model.)
