Do you really think fielding can vary as much as hitting from year to year?

I won't get into why unless you answer stupidly.

Regardless of what the stats say, I saw him play, and the guy was to me the best glove in the game. Most contemporary players viewed him as the top shortstop in the game. The media did too. And he did it for a long time. The guy is an out and out Hall of Famer in my opinion

Yeah, it can.

Fair enough. Here's why you're an idiot:

When you hit a ball, a lot of factors come into play. You can absolutely crush it but hit it right at someone. You could hit some **** blooper and it falls in. You could hit it to Dr. Badread and he screws it up. I could go on but you get the point.

When a ball is hit in your area, nothing but you and the ball matters. In your prime, there really should be no way you can have one of the best seasons ever and then be below league average the next.

Think of fielding like a probability. Some balls hit to Trout are 100% balls. He catches those every time. Others are, for example, 75% balls and 50% balls and 25% balls.

In a good year he catches almost all of the 75%ers, most of the 50%ers, and a good chunk of the low probability balls.

In a worse year, he catches less of each category and therefore does less to prevent run scoring.

It’s pretty simple.

Why would he suddenly be unable to catch the 25-75% balls?

What do you mean suddenly?

Those aren’t plays he makes every time because they are relatively difficult. In a good year, he gets to more of them.

One of the best ever, below average the next season. That feels like suddenly to me for a guy in his early 20s.

LOL @ PSBL.

Ending the year in style.

Similar to a certain pitcher from the 1970s.

Sure, in that neither belong in the Hall.

Imagine 100 low liners are hit to a center fielder.

The first 100 times, he catches it 60 times.

Is it crazy to think his performance might vary over the next 100 liners?
12/31/2017 5:44 PM
Why did he catch it 60 times one year and 11 the next?

It’s more like he caught that 60% liner 80% one year and 40% the next.

So dWAR stats are pretty unreliable? I can get behind that.

I actually like the angle/foot speed that was done last year. That can probably be turned into something useful. Unlike dWAR.
