Transportation is pretty easy. You can ride the metrolink from the airport to the stadium. From the East(from either I-55 or I-70), there is a metrolink station at Casino Queen, just across the river. Free parking over there...as for west of the downtown area, the Shrewsbury station (near I-44), or the Brentwood station (near I-64) is much easier parking, then a short ride to the ballpark...I recommend you look for lodging along the perimeter, not downtown. Most of the area along the perimeter is good, and affordable($50-75 per night is common).(ABVI has a new hotel 15 minutes south, is under $50) You can find plenty within a 15 minute drive to the rail...
Event parking at Busch or Scottrade for Blues games isn't awful. Besides the garages, there are many lots that range from $10 and up. This isn't Chicago or Boston. I have paid $50 in Windy to park at a hotel just to go to dinner. I'm sure it is even more now...my 2 cents is that the light rail and Uber make it pretty easy to stay outside the heart of the city, and save you a lot of money and aggravation...
