I've heard it said that as long as any player's on a 40 man roster - and under contract for the next season - he won't retire.
But what about minor leaguers on the 40 that are still year to year?
Not sure. I'm thinking of one case I saw, a very good major league RP won Fireman of the Year at age 40 and his owner left it till next season to see if he'd come back/demands/ratings. So technically he wasn't still on the 40, and he retired, which I assume was triggered by his age.
I can't think of anyone leaving a minor leaguer on the 40 when age might become an issue.
And I
think MikeT once said that a minor leaguer won't retire at all if he's on the 40, FWIW.
