What conditions pretty much guarantee a retirement? Interested in both marginal examples as well as extremes.

I honestly don't know. I once signed an IFA, a defensive C. He was the third catcher on my AAA team for about ten seasons. Only once had more than 300 ABs, never got on the 40. I eventually released him, and he's still playing for another franchise at age 36.

Demote him to Rookie or Low A, not a guarantee, but if they feel like they're stuck they'll retire.

Opie is this related to dead money with old/ineffective players?

More about managing minors -- I don't expect anyone under contract to retire prior to contract expiration.

Once guys reach AAA they tend to stay in the system forever. My retirements end up being AA and below. When I do promotion at the end of a season I throw all my "leftover" minor league fodder into Rookie to stuff the roster past 20/30 so I can promote more guys into low-a. They frequently retire after rollover

Does putting minor league players on the 40-man make them less likely to retire?

I've heard it said that as long as any player's on a 40 man roster - and under contract for the next season - he won't retire.

But what about minor leaguers on the 40 that are still year to year?

Not sure. I'm thinking of one case I saw, a very good major league RP won Fireman of the Year at age 40 and his owner left it till next season to see if he'd come back/demands/ratings. So technically he wasn't still on the 40, and he retired, which I assume was triggered by his age.

I can't think of anyone leaving a minor leaguer on the 40 when age might become an issue.

And I think MikeT once said that a minor leaguer won't retire at all if he's on the 40, FWIW.
