Can you play your three planned redshirts in exhibitions and then redshirt them once the season begins?

when do you have to redshirt them by

my reading of the rules is way late, like a couple days before the conference schedule starts

Another related tip on this: Playing time and promised starts do not count during pre and post season... only your 13 game regular schedule.

I think officially you can wait until 1 or 2 games into the regular season to redshirt a player, but I could be wrong on that. But, if the player plays just 1 down in the first game, then you can't redshirt him. So I don't mess around with that, I redshirt my players before the regular season starts.

Can redshirt a player up until the 7th game of the season, as long as they have not played in a game other than the three exhibition games.
