Tough day for jetscanes as he's already down 2 of his 4 playoff teams. He'll need to do well with the other two to have a shot at Round 2.

Personally, this is why I plan to make changes to the playoff point system. I forgot to do it this year. Basically, the rich tend to get richer.

Already, there's a decent correlation (.632) between Playoff Points per Playoff Team (effectively, a way to measure how good an owner's teams have performed in the playoffs) and Regular Season Win Total. This will only increase, since most of the high-performing owners have more teams left alive in general.

Next year, there will be changes to the playoff point structure. The result will likely be that there are fewer points available. The tricky part is doing it in a way that still preserves the drama that comes with the current structure.

One thing I have been thinking about is subtracting points for playoff losses.

So, if you win a series 4-0, you get a 4 point boost. If you win a series 4-3, though, you only get a 1 point boost. If you lost a series, you'd simply get 0 points (i.e. you wouldn't lose points -- that feels a bit too out there).

Combined with reducing the amount of points for winning various series and/or making the playoffs in the first place (approach TBD), I think this could be effective. After this round, I'm going to check what the difference would have been to evaluate it.

I think the bonus playoff points helps offset the possibility of one team "ruining" your chance to make the cage. In addition, it makes them much more exciting and meaningful, which it should IMO. Perhaps tweaking it so that the points that carry over to Round 2 are lessened (the rich not getting so much richer), while keeping the playoff point structure in a way that movement can fluctuate to give more teams a dream as long as possible. Just food for thought...

I agree. I like the current structure as it gives team hope. Sure, it creates a bigger gap between the elite owners and those below, but this is partially offset by the weighting of Round 2 points. If you reduce playoff points, then it drastically reduces the number of teams that still have a shot at Round 2 come playoff time.

Have you ever given any thought to resetting points after Round 1 and having Round 2 points decide the winner? It'd be interesting to see how different the various Top 24 rankings would look if only Round 2 points were counted.

Counting Round 1 points as .5 points in the final score does lessen that gap, but then the gap rears itself again during the Round 2 playoffs.

I don't think I would remove Round 1 entirely. It is meant to do more than just be a binary value to see did you get in or not. Performance in Round 1 should be considered when deciding who was the best owner this year

I think I've said this before, but I think the solution here is to keep 1 point/win, drop all the 5 point bonuses, and have a 10 point bonus for winning the WS.

The problem now is not that the rich get richer, it's that what you end up rewarding is being like the Maddox-era Atlanta teams, constantly winning the LDS, then going under .500 the rest of the way. Removing all those 5 point bonuses stops that. It's especially bad because it's relatively easy to mimic those teams. Stack up on Milacki/Hill/etc types, run all of them out in the LDS, then go .400 the rest of the way with what's left, and you end up with way more points than most other strategies. But that's not a good way to play playoff baseball. And do we want teams like those Atlanta teams to score better than, say, the early 2010s Giants?

You do want some bonuses. You want people to still have a chance to make big jumps. If it's still 21 points for winning a WS (11 wins + 10 bonus), then every playoff team gives you lots of chances to make a big leap. So you still have drama. But you have it where you should have it - in the WS, not in all the LDSs.

This is not a change that would help me, by the way. Mostly I've done well by feasting in the LDS, and then occasionally getting a bit lucky in later rounds. But I think it would make a better tournament.

I am biased due to my lack of consistent playoff success - but I feel like the playoffs are such a crapshoot that we should minimize its impact on the overall standings as much as possible.

I do agree that mobility via the playoffs should be possible -- it helps maintain interest and create drama (which is good for the tournament as a whole).

I think my main problem with handing out too many bonus points is related to MNH's point. Not only does luck factor into success in the playoffs (which we can mitigate by removing the 5 point series-win bonuses), but also by just who gets in in the first place. Why should the owner of a 95 win team be punished for having two 100+ win teams in it's division, while an 81 win team wins another division and has a chance to accumulate points? I struggle with rectifying that from a philosophical perspective.
